Austin’s favorite sci-fi radio thriller comes to life in an entirely new form! Three actors once again portray a variety of characters as sludge-monsters from the Planet Zygon invade the earth. Only this time, their adventures are accompanied by more 1200 drawings by graphic wizard Tim Doyle, projected on the Long Center’s huge screen and accompanied by Graham Reynolds’ original score. Keeping Austin weirdly wonderful!

I was very happy to see yet another engaging, creative show in Austin at the Long Center- The Intergalactic Nemesis- seated in the 2nd row. I have never seen a Live Action Graphic Novel. I've seen a comic book adapted to the stage (Giants in Those Days), but this isn't quite the same thing. Three actors get on stage and do the voices of various characters in the comic book while the scenes are shown on a large projector. All the while, a very talented foley artist supplies the appropriate sound effects. The Intergalactic Nemesis was like a Christopher Nolan movie in that if you zoned out for even a minute, you would be lost. Basically, the plot involves Timmy Mendez and Molly Sloan as they try to save Earth from the evil Mysterion and the terrifying Zygonians. It's a campy, pulp story, but that's what makes it so appealing. All aspects of Intergalactic Nemesis engaged me from beginning to end. Congratulations to Jason Neulander and the Long Center for a fantastic production.

I had such a great time at this show this weekend. The show was amazing. And the whole atmosphere was a buzz. You can tell this show is still going to go far.

The pianist was dynamic keeping the action going by the music he played. That just doesn’t say enough about Graham Reynolds.
The sound effects were so much fun, a Kraft’s Mac & Cheese box shaken to help create the sound of a train along with
another instrument. The coconut shells, for the horses hooves...it goes on and on. This is just a small tiny portion of what you missed by not attending this spectacular show.
Then we get to the actors, the different voices they used to portray the comic book characters was amazing.
I hope the show comes back next year, or maybe this year for a Christmas special.

This production is not JUST for weird folks, comic book fans or the curious. Mainstream theatre patrons should embrace this full bore radio-play-cum-live-graphic novel in droves. But first, a salute to the decade-plus perserverance of writer-dir.-prod. Jason Neulander, former artistic dir. at Austin's Salvage Vanguard Theater ('94-'08).
Thank goodness for the 15-min. intermission. The wham-bam-socko-whirr sci-fi-n-spy action is practically so non-stop as to make the audience want to catch its breath. Between watching the fast-paced dialogue of the trio of actors -- Shana Merlin, Chris Gibson, Mical Trejo, and all with great resumes -- folowing the hard-working sound effects man Buzz (cq) Moran and listening to nonstop composer Graham Reynolds as hundreds of beautifully colored (Paul Hanley, Lee Duhig) comic book images flash on and off the screen...well...I had to rest up most of Saturday. (Maybe it's why the UT-Rice game seemed so dreadfully dull.) Pow! Shazam! Ungh! Take that!

The first performance of the Long Center's 2010-11 season perfectly defines one of its important goals -- encouraging local artists. In the late 1990s, the talented writer Jason Neulander created a sci-fi radio serial performed in installments on KUT-FM. Later, it was rewritten as a full-length show. Last year, he collaborated with artist Tim Doyle to develop a comic-book version of this story. The artwork, more than 1,000 pieces, is projected on an enormous screen. While three actors deliver (not read) the script, there is wondeful piano accompaniment by composer-performer Graham Reynolds and lots of live sound effects by award winner Buzz Moran. (First name is perfect!)
The cast, Shana Merlin, Mical Trejo and Chris Gibson are a superb ensemble. Gibson is noteworthy for voicing nine characters, sometimes two or more in the same scene. I have never seen anything like this production. Congrats to the Long Ctr. for reaching out to this playwright and these artists. You'll enjoy it.

But then there's the even more unique delight of watching the making of the story as it's being made. The foley artist/sound genius Buzz Moran plays his sound-making objects (some ordinary, some extraordinary) with a tenderness reminiscent of a violin virtuoso, nursing the perfect sound at the perfect moment. Graham Reynolds "rides" his piano as if it were a bronco at a rodeo, keeping the music only one buck short of out-of-control (while maintaining perfect control.) And watching the voice actors as they glide between roles, seeing the little "unseen" character physicalities that emerge, is a pleasure. Major props to Chris Gibson, whose range of characters has to be seen to be believed. Jason Neulander has fused comics and theater into one majorly entertaining artistic marvel.
