Claudio Monteverdi, best-known for his secular madrigals and operas, published his Vespers for the Blessed Virgin in July of 1610. Commonly dubbed the Vespers of 1610, is nothing short of a monumental work that has recently become a cornerstone of choral repertoire. Noted for being one of the first works to incorporate secular musical styles and themes into sacred music, the Vespers cohesively brings together an unprecedented range of musical forms -- including plainsong, sonata form, motets, Madrigals and hymn style -- into one, binding work. The result is a thrilling and diverse work that is both texturally rich, and virtuosic.
To bring a historically accurate performance to the stage, the Chamber Singers will be accompanied by specialists from around the nation playing period instruments native to Monteverdi’s time. San Francisco-based period wind ensemble The Whole Noyse will perform on recorders, cornettos and sackbuts, instead of flutes, trumpets, and trombones. The string section will use baroque-era bows on gut strings, in place of modern-day steel strings.
