Our Body: The Universe Within, an acclaimed educational exhibition of human anatomy, is scheduled to open in The University of Texas at Austin's spacious, recently completed H. J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture & Sports on Saturday April 24th.
The exhibition exposes the inner workings of human anatomy using actual human bodies that have been preserved with a unique process known as "polymer impregnation." Polymer impregnation replaces fluid from the body with polymers that prevent decay and decomposition.
"The exhibit is revealing, educational and breathtaking in its presentation," says Dr. Jan Todd, Stark Center co-director and a professor in the College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and Health Education. “Viewers literally and figuratively are going under the skin and looking at what's usually only seen by doctors and scientists. It’s an exciting learning tool for individuals of any age."

Fascinating yes. Educational yes, but not perfectly executed. The lighting was dark overall, and not sufficient on several informational placards. The brain was under-emphasized. I did not see the seat of all emotion, the amygdala. I was fascinated by the tiny stapes bone in the ear and the large size of the liver. But, was I looking at a child or an adult? One probably needs the 45 minute audio for full educational value. I wondered if a plastic replica of the fully developed live system may have taught me more. Sagittal slices conjure disturbing science fiction references. The prenatal area has a great review of fetal development week by week. The spinal column, vertebrae, and nervous system are excellent. The tone and music were appropriately referential. I recommended this exhibit because it is truly a unique experience. The Stark Center is a good exhibit space and its dedication to physical culture and sports is a welcomed addition to our city.

Our Body: The Universe Within is a wonderful opportunity to view a stunning and well-presented exhibit of the human body. You WILL see and understand the body like you never have before... regardless of your background.
ALL of the body "items" shown have undergone a process which preserves and make them plastic-like. There are many full bodies shown in various ways so that you may study the many different and interrelated systems that make up the human body. There are also many exhibits of body parts: hands, feet, lungs, liver, muscles, etc.... available for detailed study. In terms of logistics: The exhibit is well lit, there is quiet music playing in the background, some museum patrons are silently studying the bodies, some patrons are quietly chatting with their friends about what they are viewing, there are some benches to sit down on should you need to rest...More at nowplayingaustin.wordpress.com

Our Body,The Universe Within is an extraordinary exhibit in an promising new Austin museum. I left in deeper reverence and gratitude for the miracle of the human body, and for the generous souls whose bodies will forever grace humanity’s understanding of itself. This exhibit inspired me to become increasingly mindful of what I eat, as well as how and when I eat, breathe, move and exercise. Children seemed equally entranced and inspired. I heard several good questions from them, and not a trace of fear or disgust. I also left feeling even more convinced, that anything organized to work together in such an intricate awe inspiring way, has to be for some higher purpose.Hopefully, the more we understand how to do that, the better off our souls and humanity will eventually be.

I am always interested in learning more about the body and how it works. I was excited about this exhibit because I thought it was the same one I saw at the Milwaukee Museum a couple years ago. However, it was only pieces of that exhibit, such as slices of the body vertically and horizontally. This exhibit is laid out in terms of system, so you can see the Digestive System, Circulatory System, and Reproductive Systems, etc. No programs or written literature were provided about the pieces and so it was unclear whether these were real parts of the body, or models of the body organs, or both. I would have like to have something to read, but auditory systems were provided that I did not take advantage of. I saw many children there and wondered if they would ask about the male sex organs that were in plain view on many of the exhibits. All in all, it is a great way to understand visually what is going on inside our bodies, which are amazing in their structure and function.

This is a very interesting exhibit. To be able to view bodies, inside and out, up so close - was fascinating. It's remarkable how the texture of the muscles has remained - the tendons of the arms and legs - all so perfect. I overheard a young student comment that she wished she'd come prior to her exam that day - she was sure she would've scored higher on it.
It is a very frank showing - if you bring children make sure you're prepared to answer their questions about anatomy - or prepare them in advance as to what they'll see.
The various systems of the body are shown in separate rooms - giving you plenty of room to move about and spend time taking in the different presentations.
Several of the exhibits show diseased organs alongside healthy ones, making it easier to see the difference from a layman's point of view.
If you have any curiosity about the internal workings of your own body - seeing the exhibit is a great way to know it better.
