A history professor takes her 7-year-old daughter on a Mediterranean cruise as a prelude to their trip to Bombay. Along the way the mother tells stories about the great civilizations that have arisen and fallen along the coasts of that fabled sea. In the process the director is covertly commenting on the post-9/11 world. Manohla Dargis writes: “Maybe it takes an angry old man who can cede the sins of the West without also sacrificing its ideals. Mr. Oliveira … has survived a century's worth of catastrophe and seems very much a man of the Enlightenment. This stirring film, which he has directed with an almost willful inattention to cinematic niceties, doesn't look very pretty. But then, to state the obvious, neither does the world.”
