An elderly filmmaker (Mastrooianni) and his middle-aged leading actor, Afonso, travel to Portugal with friends. The actor is in his prime, but the director feels that his days are numbered. As they travel into increasingly remote areas of Portugal, they see a world and way of life that are rapidly disappearing elsewhere. De Oliveira’s meditation on memory, decline, and death is ironic and not really auto-biographical since 13 years later the director is still making movies at the age of 101. Sadly, this was Mastroianni’s final film appearance.

In this much more autobiographical film, de Oliveira explores his hometown, Porto (aka O Porto), the second largest city in Portugal. Born there in 1908, the director finds only fragments of places he once knew, if he is lucky. More often, entire buildings are gone, replaced by boutiques or new construction. Music, photographs, and memories are often all that remain of his past, and even those memories must always be questioned for their accuracy.
