John Pielmeier’s powerful stage drama celebrating its 30th anniversary. Summoned to a convent, a court appointed psychiatrist, is asked to determine the sanity of a young novitiate accused of murdering her newborn. Who killed the infant, who fathered this tiny victim, and what does everyone know, including the Mother Superior, which keeps her from the truth? These questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith, identity, and the power of love leading to a dramatic and compelling climax. Starring Dawn Erin, Laura Ray and Austin Critics Table award winner Jennifer Underwood with direction by CTC Artistic Director Andy Berkovsky.

Agnes of God is a bit dated in its view of psychology, but the battle it depicts between faith and education is still a timely one. But more importantly, the play provides an excellent vehicle for three actresses, and in this production they deliver. Jennifer Underwood plays a more sympathetic (and human) nun than we're used to seeing, and tears your heart out with her final line. Dawn Erin gives a compelling and nuanced turn in perhaps the most thankless role as the analyst who narrates the proceedings. And Laura Ray is chilling and deeply moving as the delusional nun haunted by a troubled childhood. After the show, you may be, like I was, too shaken to leave your seat for a moment; but these are performances that deserve a standing ovation.

Agnes of God offers penetrating, even disturbing insight into the power and hence, the possible dangers of an unquestioned faith life, whether rooted in religious or scientific ideologies. The three characters represent a myriad of surprising outcomes from well intended spiritual or scientific paradigms gone wrong. All three actors deliver a convincing, and powerful portrayal of their characters complexities and mystery. Their comprehensive dialogue leave the audience in uncomfortable contemplation about the pro's and con's of one’s own inherited or selected ideologies, due to the all too fragile, vulnerable, powerful and/or egotistical nature of the human mind, heart and soul. Agnes of God is a must see, for those who willing to look at life from inside out, and bottom up. But if you leave feeling a little wobbly, don’t be surprised to find your prayers, or your reasoning, just don’t satisfy like they use to, and needing or wanting to dig a bit deeper.

This is a fine mounting of this show which is 30 years old. The fact that it still is relevant is very sad. But there will always be painful secrets and personal struggles that require all our courage to face and conquer. The three actresses - Laura Ray, Dawn Erin, Jennifer Underwood - all embody their characters' problems very well.
And we see some movement and growth by each character. It is not the cast's fault that the play presents very unsatisfying endpoints for each character. But it did color my experience of the play. I did feel the pain, but I did not feel the healing. Still it is a good evening of theater.

I have had a weird fascination with this play since high school, and I've come across a couple productions before taking in The City Theatre's interpretation. This was by far the best interpretation I have ever seen onstage. It even rivals the movie.
The actors are aware of the depth of purpose and seriousness of the story without ever making you feel weighted down with grief. Jennifer Underwood's Mother Miriam is strong, witty and yet clearly struggles with emotional turmoil. Dawn Erin's Dr. Livingston is determined, self-assured of purpose and also warm and generous. And as for the most emotional and difficult character, Laura Ray's Agnes is as innocent and beautiful as she's described, even up till the last minute of discovering the truth.
The set is perfectly simple, and the use of the actors (onstage nearly the whole show) is strong and thought-provoking. This is one of the best shows I've seen in Austin to date.

And director Andy Berkovsky deserves praise as the staging and design were an incredible visual and emotional journey. Do miracles happen? One is at City Theatre. One of the best dramatic live theatre performances you will see in Austin this year.

Agnes of God is a subtle, fine play, and the performance at the City Theater does it justice. All 3 actresses play their roles with distinction. I recommend it highly.
