To close our season, we've chosen classical ballet's greatest comedy, Coppélia. A story of mistaken identity and a beautiful mechanical doll, Coppélia leaves young and old alike bemused by the antics of our two confused lovers, Swanhilda and Franz. With a beautifully engaging score by Leo Delibes, you'll be whisked away to a doll maker's workshop on Mother's Day weekend.       This was my first experience seeing a performance of Coppelia (though had heard wonderful things about the story and music from friends). I was not disappointed! Both the music and the dancing was beautiful. What struck me however was the sense of comedic timing by the dancers! To me it is a truly a gift to be able to convey hilarity with no words and while still maintaining the grace and beauty that the two leads possess! Very well done!! Collapse

      Those are the best words to describe Ballet Austin's production of Coppelia. A supporter of the arts though I am, I have never been to the Ballet. Having seen it, I have an immense respect for the attention and effort necessary to successfully tell a story with dance and movement and no words. Coppelia is basically about a man who falls in love with what turns out to be a mechanical doll, and wants to bring her to life, and a series of unfortunate events (to borrow Lemony Snickett's phrase) ensues, though it ends happily. The solo dance sequences were all amazing, and the lady who played the mechanical doll did a stupendous job of pulling off the sudden stiff then limp moves required for the role. Whether you're new to Ballet or a long-time patron, you should see Coppelia. Collapse

      Coppelia is a lovely piece of fluff, very apropos for Mother's Day weekend, witness the many children who giggled at Dr. Coppelius' mechanical dolls and their antics. The company is superb, especially in the finale wedding dance, and Ashley Lynn Gilfix is exquisite as Swanhilde, especially when she pretends to be Coppelia, the mechanical doll, dancing with the other creations of Dr. C. But this company only does four ballets a year, and it's much too good for this old-fashioned crowd-pleaser. After almost a century of Balanchine, this choreography is trite; Ballet Austin is better served by performances like the previous Bach program by Stephen Mills. However, the music is beautiful and the dancing was lovely; I don't want to carp. I commend the costumes, scenery, the whole production was very handsome. But let's have more ballets that make us soar, not just those that make us comfortable Collapse

      This was my first experience seeing a performance of Coppelia (though had heard wonderful things about the story and music from friends). I was not disappointed! Both the music and the dancing was beautiful. What struck me however was the sense of comedic timing by the dancers!
