The BLUE Theatre and Getalong Gang Performance Group present the Austin premiere of Steven Gridley's Post-Oedipus, a radical re-working of Euripides' play The Phoenician Women. Post-Oedipus chronicles the tumultuous events of Oedipus' family after his fall, using warped time, musical interjections, chaotic revelries, and intolerable silences to unravel the mental state of a family after disaster. At once a stunning family drama and a jaunt into the absurd, Post-Oedipus will delight and challenge audiences. Coming off their most recent project, the Austin Critics’ Table-nominated Arthuriosis: A Metal Opera, the Getalong Gang’s Spencer Driggers and Zenobia Taylor join forces to direct and choreograph this memorable production. Designed by Stephen Pruitt and featuring Jenny Gravenstein (Critics’ Table winner and B. Iden Payne nominee), Nicole Portwood, Seth Thomas, Steve Cruz, Michelle Turner, Helyn Rain Messenger, and James Brownlee.Photo credit Daniel Brock.

      As a student and lover of Greek drama and tragedy, I went to the Getalong Gang's "Post-Oedipus" with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. Although the post-modern adaptation of Euripedes' "The Phoenician Women" plays a bit too much like a reality TV show gone bad, the performances, choreography, and direction are all impressive. Jocasta, the driving force of the show, is a role that is brilliantly executed by Jennifer Gravenstein, whose tour-de-force of melodramatics recalls Gloria Swanson and Bette Davis at their greatest diva moments. Choreographer Zenobia Taylor makes excellent use of a multi-leveled stage, creating distinctive movements to define each character and stylized fighting to heighten the histrionic tone that characterizes the play. In the hands of a lesser company, the audience might walk away simply feeling bad for the characters, but the Getalong Gang was able to keep a sense of realism present throughout the madness, and thus win the audience's empathy.       I saw Post Oedipus last weekend, and I have to say that I was completely delighted! The acting was the best I've seen in Austin in quite some time. There isn't a weak link in the group. Every moment... Expand

      I saw Post Oedipus last weekend, and I have to say that I was completely delighted! The acting was the best I've seen in Austin in quite some time. There isn't a weak link in the group. Every moment of the show takes you by surprise, and it's like nothing I've ever seen before on stage. It will break your heart AND make you laugh, and it is all so very genuine and compelling. We are all still talking about it, days later. Collapse

      To me when you can take a Greek tragedy concerning incest and self-mutilation and weave humor throughout the entire play, that's great writing, directing, and acting! Awesome job and completely worth... Expand
