The Indian Classical Music Circle of Austin proudly presents a masterful performance of Carnatic music on the Mandolin by Padmashri Mandolin U. Shrinivas (a.k.a. The Mandolin Magician). Mandolin Shrinivas has often been compared to some of the world greatest prodigies.
Shrinivas raised the Mandolin, an unknown instrument, to a respectable status in Indian classical music. His accomplishment is all the more remarkable when one considers that the last time an instrument was added to the Carnatic music pantheon was in the 1890s, when the violin became a standard accompaniment in Indian classical music. It took the British Empire to do that in the 1890s; all it required in the 1980s was the music of a quiet genius. Shrinivas’s music has been described as having “the freshness and spontaneity of a mountain brook,” his improvisations of notes like “cascading waterfalls” and the alaaps (melodic delineations) akin to “a serene, majestic river flowing through the plains.”
