David Bowie plays a “silent, ethereal POW” in a Japanese military camp during WW2. He finds his own way to protest the mistreatment rife in the camp and eventually comes to the attention of the commander (played by Ryuichi Sakamoto, a composer/performer). While the Japanese officer and the British prisoner may find their own understanding, another POW (Tom Conti) suffers under the punishment of a sadistic sergeant. Certainly an alternative view of the cultural conflicts brought by war.
