We will start off with his most controversial work, which explores the fatal limits of sexual passion turning into all-consuming obsession. In Japan in 1936 a married innkeeper and his servant begin an affair – simple and common enough, but together they explore the outer limits of sex until they reach a point of no return. Frank and yet graceful and at times truly beautiful in its depiction of a couple in heat, IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES caused Oshima to be charged with obscenity in Japan. He won the case. In the US the film was seized by customs officers and was blocked from British screens until 1991. As with all his work Oshima is intent on exploring aspects of the Japanese psyche, while creating unforgettably beautiful and powerful films.
