Susana Baca belongs to a new generation of Peruvian singers, delving into the shadows of the past to recover shimmering melodies and seductive rhythms. She is largely responsible for the revival of many forms of Afro-Peruvian folklore making her one of the most important singers to come out of Peru. Baca’s seemingly effortless interpretative skills belie years of work assembling the songs, the stories and the steps of music and dances once consigned to history. As a symbol for her country, its culture and its people, she conveys a message rich with evocative imagery enhanced by her delicate yet soulful voice. Baca has toured the United States several times, released several albums and won the GRAMMY for Best Folk Album in 2002.
