Wally Workman Gallery presents new works by acclaimed Austin artist Jennifer Balkan. Her third solo show at the gallery, Jennifer's paintings manifest raw emotion through luscious paint quality and direct confrontation of her subjects with the viewer. Using fortunes from fortune cookies and maps from across the globe sewn directly onto the canvas, she merges this raw reality with an abstract subconscious. Each piece becomes it's own psychological narrative.
Before becoming a full-time painter in 2002, Jennifer Balkan studied behavioral neuroscience at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and received her Ph. D in Latin American sociology from the University of Texas. Her formal education has a profound impact on her painting, as she continues to explore the human psyche both psychologically and sociologically through the 2-dimensional.
