Lots of comedy aficionados look down their noses at impressionists and, let’s face it, many practitioners of that craft have genuinely earned that disdain with an overly slick, lounge-act manner and woefully generic impressions--improbably, in this day and age, you can still stumble into takes on, say, Reverend Jim or Jack Nicholson. And then there’s Mike MacRae, who projects an enormously engaging manner while dispensing spot-on, immensely refreshing impressions. And MacRae not only takes the stage armed with an arsenal of distinctive, deftly-drawn re-creations of Harrison Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, Vince Vaughan and many others, but also casts them into wildly entertaining vignettes in which the impact of these comedy extravaganzas consistently exceed the sum of their parts. Little wonder that his television credits include Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” “Late Show With David Letterman” (spotlighted in the program’s “Impressionist Week 2”), and “Frank TV,” alongside Cap City fave Frank Caliendo. But nothing tops watching--and hearing--MacRae unleash his vocal tour de force live, in person. Like at Cap City.
