Ryan Hamilton has at two things in common with Jerry Seinfeld, one important, one not so important: The unimportant one is that he physically resembles Seinfeld and, to a lesser extent, a former co-star--which he’s been know to acknowledge onstage: “I’m like the illegitimate son of Jerry and Elaine--look at me!” The far more important trait he shares with Seinfeld, far beyond the toothy countenance, is that Hamilton has a real gift for taking a small, unexceptional occurrence or phrase, applying a wizened comedic eye and turning out a seemingly casual but deft observation--or string of observations--that hit us hard in all the right ways for the ensuing simplicity and hilarity. Take, for example, his bit about an advertisement he saw offering “Lasik for $295 per eye,” from which a gloriously Seinfeldian take unspools: “that seems low…I’m not into bargain surgery…who’s not getting the whole package?” and so on. Little wonder that Hamilton did quite well on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” (he was a semifinalist in the 2007 edition), and has been a finalist in national comedy competitions--to say nothing of winning, in 2005, Sierra Mist’s “America’s Next Great Comic Search,” yet another national contest. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
