With some of the most lavish sets, costumes and special effects ever to have been created for the stage, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA directed by Harold Prince traces the tragic love story of a beautiful opera singer and a young composer shamed by his physical appearance into a shadowy existence beneath the majestic Paris Opera House. Adapted from Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of mystery and suspense, this award-winning musical has woven its magical spell over standing room audiences in more than 100 cities worldwide and is now the longest-running show in Broadway history.

The last time I saw Phantom was on Broadway 2 years ago. One would think that a touring production might pale in comparison to the grandiose spectacle of such an enormous production in the heart of the Big Apple.
However, I was absolutely amazed at how completely this production was seamlessly integrated into what should be a foreign environment.
From the lavish costumes, to the unbelievably complicated and intricate set, to the world-class performers, not one thing was compromised. This production was absolutely mesmerizing.
All of the performers were pitch-perfect and on top of their game, with magnificent, rich voices and wonderful acting. Of special note were Christine, Raoul and the Phantom. The three were absolutely perfect together, and I could not take my eyes off of them then entire evening.
Do not miss this show!!! It is one of a kind.

As the theater darkened, I held my breath, waiting to see if the phantom of my memories, of my twenty-something self that was awed by the sights and sounds of this performance, would still have the power to sweep me away. And boy, did it ever! From the moment that electrified chandelier took flight from the stage, the Phantom took hold. With his rich and haunting voice, Tim Gleason delivers a heart-wrenching performance as the tortured Phantom. His dark obsession nearly consumes the crystalline-voiced Christine Daaé (Trista Moldovan/Kelly Grant). These two characters truly are the centerpiece, but are well-supported by an array of characters bringing humor, anxiety and passion to the experience. As compelling as the characters themselves, the sets are simply astounding! Transforming again and again, from an underground river to a star-filled night, the backdrops take you fully into the experience, enhanced by the exquisitely detailed costumes. This performance truly does transport you.

The Phantom of the Opera at Bass Concert Hall offers the theater goer a truly unique and dazzling experience. Everything from the rich, elaborate sets, the sensual gilded stage architecture, the detailed backdrops (scenes), and the colorful costumes to the delightful vocal performances are world class! Whether you are an old-time fan of The Phantom or a newbie you will be awed by this spectacular production. Go now!... as this is their last time to bring this world-renowned show to Austin,Texas. The only "problem" I could note was my inability to stop the action for a moment or two so I could more fully take in the beauty of the marvelous sets and the rich costumes. The costumes for the song Masquerade are without a doubt some of the most stunningly unique and colorful ever to be created for a musical! One reviewer states that they alone are worth the admission price and I agree.
But please don't take my word for it--go see it, Go EXPERIENCE it yourself. You will be all the richer for it.

Friday night’s performance of The Phantom of the Opera at the Texas Performing Art Center Bass Concert Hall was a show to remember. If you’ve never seen the show, like myself, sit back and be prepared to be transported from 2010 to 1911, and then dive straight into Paris in 1881. With the proscenium draped in black parachute clothe and the stage filled out in muted rich tones, the opening, at the auction house does exactly what it was intended to do-intrigue the viewer enough to want to know the back story behind the music box monkey and the infamous chandelier.
One question that generally arises, can the Broadway mega-hit be effectively pulled off by a traveling show in Austin? The short answer, Yes! The transformation of the Bass Concert Hall was complete. The feeling was such that when the voice of the phantom was present, you couldn’t help looking around to see if there was a balcony seat that he was appearing in. more at nowplayingaustin.wordpress.com

Beginning very dark and slightly unaudible making the scene somewhat uninteresting and doesn't get your attention, but then the Chandelier does and from then on a whirlwind of music, glitter & costumes, songs which make you want to cry, tickle our funny bone, weep with the purity of the voices blending so hypnotically. Christine Daae and Viscount Raoul de Chagny voices blended well together but the performances between Christine "Erik" - The Phantom did indeed soar vocally in strength and tenderness. So much so, they had us rooting for the villain. In this particular production, the weaker character was that of Meg Giry, Christine's friend and daughter of Madame Giry. This is a plump role but seemed to be underplayed in this production. The rest of the supporting cast were outstanding in voice and performance. Bravo! Again, the small gestures, the soft "I love you", the anguish was felt throughout the large theatre and brought us intimately into the world of no return. Go see it!

As a Phantom newbie, I can not compare this stage production/performance with 22 years of productions/performances at venues around the world. But from eight rows back in Bass, the voices of Tim Gleason (Phantom), Trista Moldovan (Christine), and Sean MacLaughlin (Raoul) were near flawless and the sets were awe-inspiring. You “feel” water flowing underneath the oars when the Phantom kidnaps Christine. The costumes at the masquerade ball were dazzling in their color, variety, and detail -- visually stupendous, and alone worth the price of admission. Phantom’s musical undercurrent, “Music of the Night,” was a haunting reminder of the power of muse and romantic obsession to transform and tragically consume. As the Phantom perches above the audience from the roof of the Pairs Opera House, so does this opera reign supreme as the most successful entertainment venture of all time. I suspect this performance upholds the pedigree quite well.

Spring for the best seats you can afford and don’t, by any means, miss the “Texas Farewell Tour” performance of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Phantom...” and Charles Hart’s wonderful lyrics at UT’s Bass Hall. This is as good as professional theatre gets. This long-running, proven, crowd- pleasing musical is not only a “spectacle,” but Friday’s opening performance was spectacular in all respects.
The leads – Tim Martin Gleason as the Phantom, Trista Moldovan as Christine and Sean MacLaughlin as Raoul – are consummate singers and actors, beautiful and handsome and talented. Gleason had already played Raoul 2,600, times, an American record, before assuming the role of the mysterious, subterranean-dwelling opera house composer.

Audiences will enjoy the superior singing, dancing and acting of the entire cast, but special praise goes to the set designers, craftsmen and stage personnel who combine their own talents to transport attendees back to late 19th Century Paris.
Ornate, detailed, beautiful set pieces, curtains and painted back drops (scenes) make one’s eyes move quickly to take it all in. The scene changes are smooth, quick, almost noiseless, seamlessly transitioning the action.
Then there are the costumes! Gorgeous, rich, colorful – numerous, eye-popping creations capable of repeatedly distracting one from the storyline.
Choreography may seem to be secondary to the romance, drama and mystery in the foreground, but certainly deserves attention and appreciation. Special effects are particularly noteworthy, and the sound (more)
