Making Movies, an exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center, explores the collaborative processes that take place behind the scenes in filmmaking. Featuring more than 350 items, the exhibition draws on the Ransom Center's extensive holdings documenting the history of the motion picture industry to illustrate the highly collaborative nature of the movie-making process. The exhibition focuses on the artistic collaboration that is unique to the medium.

Highlights include original scripts, storyboards, production photos, and call sheets, in addition to screenplays from The Third Man, North by Northwest, and Shakespeare in Love, and costumes from Gone with the Wind, An Affair to Remember, and Taxi Driver.

      Film fans are certain to be intrigued by the Harry Ransom Center's new exhibit, "Making Movies." Each area of the exhibit details a distinct aspect of the movie-making process, including producing, directing, writing, acting, cinematography, sound, hair and makeup, costume design, and publicity. A wide range of movies from different eras are represented. Most intriguing are the intimate letters, handwritten comments in screenplays, and sketched storyboards from some of Hollywood's most famous movie denziens, including Alfred Hitchcock, David Mamet, Victor Fleming, and David O. Selznick. As an avid "Gone With The Wind" fan, I was most awestruck by the stunning red dress worn by Vivien Leigh in her portrayal of Scarlett O'Hara. While the exhibit was meticulously curated and accessible to a wide range of audiences, I would have liked to see a more chronological flow to some of the groupings of materials. Overall, this exhibit ranks as one of Austin's finest, and it is also free! Collapse

      Film fans are certain to be intrigued by the Harry Ransom Center's new exhibit, "Making Movies."
