UNIVERSITY INC. (54m, 1999), is about the corporatization of higher education at the University of Texas-Austin, centering on the controversial closing of the longest running campus repertory film series there in 1999. It began as a segment on international film guru John Pierson’s much heralded IFC/Bravo cable show SPLITSCREEN.
John Pierson will join Kyle after the screening on Sunday, Nov 22nd, for a talkback about the fate of repertory and theatrical film in the ensuing years.
On Monday, Nov 23rd, Kyle will be joined after the screening by Texas State Employees Union rep Caroline O'Connor for a talkback about the current state of corporatization at UT, especially ongoing university-wide faculty and support staff cutbacks made in the name of the “bottom-line.”
AMERICAN COWBOY (52m, 1998) is about gay rodeo champ and Houston native Gene Mikulenka’s wild adversity filled year long journey to the International Gay Rodeo Finals in Albuquerque, NM. This screening is graciously co-sponsored by aGLIFF, Austin’s Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
