From the twisted mind of the Chaotic Theatre Company, comes Alice!, a story about a young girl’s descent into madness. Along this journey she meets characters with sinister smiles and outrageous personalities in the world premiere of this new play by James Jackson Leach, based on the eccentric tales of Lewis Carroll. Directed by Justin LaVergne. Lighting and set design by Stephen Shirey.

Throughout the show you will experience interactions like nothing you have ever seen before. Menacing laughter will fill your ears and engulf your mind. You will be torn between two worlds: the harsh reality of Blackthorn Asylum and the fantastical world of Wonderland. Don’t be afraid if you feel a slight caress around your ankles and a twinge down your spine.

      I'm loathe to use the word "disturbing" because that buzzkilling moniker might keep you from going. Well, disturbing it is and you should go. Most of the play centers around watching the... Expand

      I'm loathe to use the word "disturbing" because that buzzkilling moniker might keep you from going. Well, disturbing it is and you should go. Most of the play centers around watching the eponymous little girl tormented and beset by a malicious troop of Wonderlanders who terrify the child in cringe- inducing, creatively spooky quick scenes. Think Alice meets The Forbidden Zone With No Zanniness. Carroll's familiar characters: March Hare, Cheshire Cat and a particularly nasty Queen of Hearts appear but now are agitatedly insane, malicious or, at the very least, spooky versions of the originals. Clever stagecraft and some gritty acting (especially, Alexa Doggett, whose emotional portrayal of starkest terror holds the affair together and on pitch) deliver the ookie goods. This play is DARK, but in a good way. Collapse

      Alice! is a must see show! This was unlike any other performance I have seen. Eerie, disturbing, terribly sad, funny in places, and very much worth your time. The cast was overall very good, but... Expand

      Alice! is a must see show! This was unlike any other performance I have seen. Eerie, disturbing, terribly sad, funny in places, and very much worth your time. The cast was overall very good, but a few were true standouts in this show. Alice was simply amazing to watch. Dee and Dum were truly creepy (not the kind of playmates I would ever want!) The Hatter was really quite mad. And the Queen had me convinced that her command of "off with her head" was not some idle threat. The Vortex space fits the mood of the show perfectly. The lighting and music were mostly spot on and the blackout scenes left you wondering what was next. Kudos to Chaotic Theatre Company for bringing something truly different to Austin. Collapse
