Beaten and left for dead, a man awakens in a hospital with no idea of his identity, profession, or origins. Finding occasional kindness among people living in metal shipping containers, he creates a home with a dog and a jukebox which contains records of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll that he loves. He even slowly puts together a relationship with Irma, a shy, unworldly member of the Salvation Army. He is always on the outskirts of society with no name or ID, but a bank robbery threatens to destroy the fragile life he has begun building. Yet, with each new obstacle he finds greater strength and even begins to positively affect those around him. When his true identity is discovered and revealed to him, he faces a real existential dilemma. Three awards at Cannes and an Oscar nomination, which Kaurismaki asked to be withdrawn because of the war in Iraq.
