Dallas-based artist David Bates (b. 1952) received recognition at an early age for his expressive narrative paintings. He has become known nationally for his large and colorful paintings and sculptures. His unique style of painting draws inspiration from the directness of folk art as well as from modern masters such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Many significant public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Phillips Collection, and the Yale University Art Gallery, hold Bates’ work.
