December 3, 2009
Add Review/Comment
. What is the role of the arts in hard times, such as the Great Depression or the current recession? How do they help people deal with both social problems and their own private fears? Using examples from literature, film, music, and photography, Dickstein explores how artists and popular entertainers of the 1930s helped the nation understand and survive an unprecedented social crisis. Dickstein is a Distinguished Professor of English at Queens College and at the Graduate Center, where he is also a senior fellow of the Center for the Humanities.
