SICK is an uproarious look at a family of germ-ophobes who have severe allergies to everything from Cheez-Whiz and cleaning supplies to city air. As prisoners inside their vacuum-sealed home and garbed in non-allergic clothing they live each day in terror that a stray mold spore or chemical will sneak into their lives. When Dad brings home one of his graduate students, the family’s fear crescendos– with chaotic comedic consequences.

      Sick: "Zayd Dohrn’s new play, with the skilled direction of Capital T Theater artistic director Mark Pickell, presents a unique and involving world, with characters that grab on to you the moment they hit the stage, characters you may not ever want to meet, but that you won’t soon want to forget. Everything comes together well to make this somewhat hard to believe situation seem completely plausible, which is really a testament to what a talented group of performers are involved."       While the play is pretty straighforward, the cast was really amazing- especially Stephen Mercantel as young Davey. A round of applause to the director for assembling such a fine cast. Both hilarious... Expand

      Capital T Theatre has always been consistent in producing well-directed, passionately acted shows that stay memorable in the audience's mind long after they have left the theater. "Sick" seems to be an anomaly, because I struggled to pinpoint what I would highlight in my review. I can't quite figure out what was off--it certainly was not the skill of the actors, the directing, or the technical aspects of the performance. The talent of the cast was uniformly excellent, with Stephen Mercantel's portrayal of Davey as a closeted gay especially humorous and strong. I can only conclude that the problem with "Sick" does not lie in Capital T's production of the play, but in the script itself. Although quite comedic at times, the script suffers from a lack of development of key relationships and an anti-climactic finale. As lacking as the script is, "Sick" deserves to be seen if only to watch the nuanced and passionate work of talented performers. Collapse
