The Harry Ransom Center and the Department of English at The University of Texas at Austin present "Frances Kiernan on Biography: One Biographer and Two Very Different Women." Kiernan, former editor of The New Yorker, discusses her very different experiences writing the biographies Seeing Mary Plain: A Life of Mary McCarthy and The Last Mrs. Astor: A New York Story, about Brooke Astor. One elicited startling quotes from friends and acquaintances, and the other elicited pro forma encomiums. One required many hours in the library, poring over letters, the other required the subject's two memoirs and then dozens of live interviews followed by a surprising turn that changed the book dramatically.
