A young woman tests her Christian faith by handling poisonous snakes. A baton twirler sees the face of Jesus thirty feet in the air. A destitute woman wants to live in McDonald’s, where the sick are cured by Big Macs and no one ever dies. A housewife escapes to Oz. Pulitzer-nominated playwright Jane Martin gives us the provocative and satisfying stories of these and other women who are ostracized by the American dream. Talking With illuminates the universal struggles of unbearable loneliness, crises of confidence, bereavement, loss of hope, and wrestling with faith.

recommends NxNW's Talking With -- solo monologues by 6 women. Intimacy, grace and epiphanies, esp Marsha Sray.

Despite material that ranges from sincere and genuine to ludicrously farcical, the five actresses in NxNW's "Talking With" never miss a step. They are able to breathe life and heartfelt emotion into a collection of monologues that are at times beautifully written and at others the same shlock one finds in hundreds of bad audition monologue books. A standout amongst great talent was Jennifer Coy, who showed she could be absolutely hilarious with absolutely awful material ("Audition.") However, she doesn't just rely on shock appeal, as she was far more engaging and effective in the decidedly unflashy "Handler." The best staged performance of the evening was the thoughtful work of BJ Machalicek's "Lamps," in which she combined grace of speech and movement with a beautifully illuminated stage of lamps that highlighted her expressive face. A word to all future attendees: sit as close to the stage as you can as to best feel the magnetism and energy of these talented actresses.

Talking With consists of 11 monologues all told by women, most of whom have been marginalized by society for simply being who they are. Some are downright crazy (such as Jen Coy's psychotic auditioning actress in one of the funniest monologues of the evening) while others simply have passions that are deemed unusual by the mainstream (including a lovely monologue delivered by BJ Machalicek about the beauty of lighting). The pieces have no direct correlation with each other, except as portraits of women who learn to be proud of the marks and scars that make them unique (an idea literalized in the final piece), but the lovely performances and the deft, subtle direction by Joni McClain keep the evening compelling. My favorites were Marbles pefformed by Wendy Zavaleta and Handler performed by Jen Coy and a surprise co-star. Both provide humanity to an evening of otherwise quirky characters. A worthwhile evening of theatre.

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, as monologues can sometimes become tedious and uninteresting depending upon the substance and the delivery.
However, neither was the least bit a concern as the 6 women delivered at times thought-provoking, and at other times hilarious prose.
And, as usual, Joni McClain (nominated director for the incredible "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change") has staged the piece in such a way as to create wonderful vignettes with just the right framing. Although the set was simple, the use of a scant 10'x15' rectangle of stage, with four thin posts rising to support a surround of crown molding gives each character a beautiful "container" for their story.
In short, don't delay. Go see this great show...
