Austin Playhouse proudly presents Steve Martin’s comedy, Picasso at the Lapin Agile. It’s 1904 in Paris and a young Albert Einstein is working on a very famous theory. At the same time, a young Pablo Picasso is almost ready to “leave Blue behind.” At the Lapin Agile, a cabaret bar in Montmartre, Paris frequented by artists, anarchists, and dreamers these two young visionaries meet and engage in a lively debate on the creative process and the true nature of genius.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile is a playful, witty, incredibly funny look at how artists, scientists, and other inventors bound past society’s norms to enhance and advance humanity’s understanding of itself.

      Smart and fast-paced production of Steve Martin's slight, but very funny and incredibly cerebral comedy. Director Lara Toner keeps the pace peppy, which results in an engaging and entertaining... Expand

      Smart and fast-paced production of Steve Martin's slight, but very funny and incredibly cerebral comedy. Director Lara Toner keeps the pace peppy, which results in an engaging and entertaining experience. But at times I wished the very talented actors were given more of an opportunity to slow down and allow Martin's more poignant ramblings to really hit home. Acting is very professional, with Robert Matney and Jason Newman standing out. Newman in particular takes a role that could have easily veered toward caricature and ridiculousness, but instead plays the role as straight as possible, which ends up being funnier than an over the top impression. Ultimately, an entertaining light snack, good for a deeply intelligent laugh. Collapse

      This play is for those who enjoy absurdist humor and slapstick with their philosophy. It revolves around musings on art, science, and the 20th century. It is fast paced and the cast(Einstein and Picasso are not the only stars.) portray their colorful characters well. The characters propose ideas, spout one-liners, and provide surprises. There is much saucy humor along with some serious ideas. The audience frequently erupted with laughter over silly happenings and conversations. This imaginary meeting results in humorous ideas and insights about the creative process and events in the last century. Collapse
