B-Scene : Austin Poetry Slam

Join us for B scene, the Blanton's monthly art party. This month the Austin Poetry Slam! rocks the house. Plus enjoy music by DJ Nicknack, free appetizers, cash bar, art activities, and more. The Blanton Café will offer tasty samples of their flatbread pizzas and will be open until 9 PM.

Designer and jeweler Cynthia Bloom will showcase her latest creations during B scene. Visit the Blanton Museum Shop (open until 10:30PM) to meet Cindy and discover her unique creations which have been featured in Women’s Wear Daily Atlanta, Southern Distinction magazine, and Glamour magazine.

      Okay. Don't read this if you are under 50--maybe under 60. Get past the modest (very) offering of carrots, celery, and chocolate chip cookies. Adjust for the buzz in the atrium. Admit that your... Expand

      Okay. Don't read this if you are under 50--maybe under 60. Get past the modest (very) offering of carrots, celery, and chocolate chip cookies. Adjust for the buzz in the atrium. Admit that your hearing is not what it once was. Focus on the event--poetry or story telling, or fantasy sex. Listening to just a modest sample (5) of the poets leads to the conclusion that the issue is the same now as 40 years ago for 20-somethings--romance, sex, honor, sex,community,sex. RAP is more poetry than music to some ears. These performers were mostly gifted, practiced, rhythmic, enthusiastic. Better ears or acoustics might have made a big difference in the level of appreciation--hard to know. The Standing Water sculpture (?) surrounding the Atrium is an inspiring entrance to the staircase. It is worth the effort by itself. Nice addition, Blanton. Collapse

      All that (and more) rolled into one fantastic party – my first B-Scene. I thought the cloudburst I got caught in before entering had continued in the Rapoport Atrium: Artist Teriste Fernández “Stacked Waters ‘09” installation – custom cut acrylic in a varying shades of blue—gave the impression of a water table rising. Lightning and museum lighting made it a changing portrait of a welcome shimmering pool. The volume of DJ NickNack’s choices and the alternating volumes of the poetry slammers, however, made it hard for the burgeoning crowd to appreciate the lyrics or the poet’s messages. The poet’s who provided printed poems to accompany selected art works, however, were, to this long-time poet, challenging, perceptive and illuminating. Art influences art and the verses translated the visual to the verbal. I found the installations at the B particularly engaging, espec. “How to build a cathedral” with its cow femurs and 600,000 pennies; Bill Lundberg’s film installation, (more) Collapse

      Like the movie, “Night at the (Blanton) Museum,” this monthly B-Scene was an assault on my senses. The Poetry slam was a little too angry and way too loud for my taste. I’m not a fan of rap... Expand

      Like the movie, “Night at the (Blanton) Museum,” this monthly B-Scene was an assault on my senses. The Poetry slam was a little too angry and way too loud for my taste. I’m not a fan of rap music either. However, the people watching, hors d’ouvres and mini-tour of the art and poets to those paeans were immensely enjoyable and definitely rewarding. The Blanton event inspired my own simple haiku: Eclectic patrons Taste art, poetry, hors d’ouvres. Be seen at B-Scene Collapse
