Richard Greenberg's Tony-Award winning play, "Three Days of Rain." is a play played backwards. The first act takes place in the 1990s; the second in the 1960s during a fateful "three days of rain" — which gives the play its title and which illuminates the many unanswered questions raised in the first act. The play was also nominated for a Pulitzer.

      Richard Greenberg's Nobel Prize Winning play is alone reason enough to attend the production. Add to that the wonderful performances and stunning set, light, sound design, and special effects, and you find attendance a necessity. In the intimate space of the Hideout Theatre the audience is given the opportunity to really connect with each of these talented actors and the characters whom they portray. This emerging company's take on such a masterpiece is one that is not undertaken lightly and deserves to be rewarded. Collapse

      How little we know about even those close to us. Yet our beliefs about the past can shape us in profound ways. In two acts set some 30 years apart in the same urban apartment, six characters explore these existential questions. In Act 1, Walker (Sean Martin), his older sister, Nan (Sarah Gay), and their longtime friend, Pip (Nathan Jerkin) seek personal peace through sharing memories about their parents. The key seems hidden in the “three days of rain” mentioned in a journal by Nan and Walker’s father, Ned and revealed in Act 2. In that act, Ned (Mr. Martin) and Pip’s father, Theo (Mr. Jerkin), long-time friends and partners in a struggling young architecture firm, share the apartment. Theo is dating Lina (Ms. Gay), who will be Nan and Walker’s mother. The three have before them all life’s possibilities. Martin’s is especially compelling as his manic, self-absorbed “Walker” contrasts his repressed but ultimately liberated “Ned.” Collapse

      Superb acting, beautiful design elements, and a wonderful performance space all contribute to making "Three Days of Rain" an enlightening, soulful night of theatre. I loved every minute of it!

      This company continues to bring intelligent theater to the Austin area. The outstanding acting, ideal venue and suprising integration of characters and rain, make this show remarkable!

      Three Days of Rain is an extremely well-written piece of theatre—one reason you should see it at the Hideout theatre. The skillful interpretation and execution of the piece by the entire Penfold Theatre team is the other one. Anne McMeeking’s set is a marvelous use of the Hideout’s space, along with Nathan Brittain’s elegant lighting, Glenda Barnes’ perfect costume choices & Jeffery Alan Jones’ sound & original music give volumes of context before the playwright’s first word is uttered. Sean Martin, Sarah Gay, & Nathan Jerkins deliver a spot-on performance. It’s utterly captivating to watch these very gifted actors’ shifting relationships in the intimate Hideout space. This is ensemble acting at its best, with each actor giving just as richly as they take. The insightful choices that these three actors make are so telling & illuminating of the characters they played in the first act, that I guarantee you’ll be thinking about this production long after you’ve left the theatre.
