Austin Shakespeare brings lusty flappers, provocative dandies and a band of Prohibition politicians to The Long Center¹s Rollins Theatre, which will be transformed into the 1920s South for a new look at Shakespeare¹s dark comedy, Measure for Measure. Featuring glorious language, captivating characters and an ingenious plot, the performance brings the Rollins Theatre audience into a new three-sided thrust stage configuration putting them in the midst of a world of fun-loving licentiousness attacked by harsh laws. Starring New York (from Austin) actress, Morgan Dover-Pearl and Matt Radford, Associate Director with Actors from the London Stage.
***Austin Shakespeare presents the Asylum Street Spankers in a pre show concert Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 pm***

I really enjoyed the performance, but for those with breathing problems, be aware, the smoke used in the show is REALLY HEAVY. At certain points during the performance the cast could barely be seen. It seems like the only reason for it is to see the lights. So if you have breathing problems you may want to skip the show.

Austin Shakespeare presentation of Measure for Measure at The Long Center’s Rollins Theatre was just the right mix of ingredients for an enjoyable show that I knew the time and the author but not the subject matter. The show moved from a traditional Shakespeare atmospher to one which was transformed into the 1920s in Savanah Georgia. The stand out acting of both principal and supporting cast makes one attention move from character to character and find extraordinary talent pouring out of this group. The miminalist stage setting worked well as the audience was transported around multiple settings. The costumes were rich with the style of the times and the casts grasp of the accents was key having spent a fair amount of time in that area of the country. Thanks to ACOT for letting me know of the show and helping me decide to come.

Tackling one of Shakespeare's lesser known shows presents an opportunity to score big and open eyes, but also the possibility to miss the mark and leave an audience lost and frustrated. By all accounts, Austin Shakespeare's current production of Measure for Measure certainly measures up. The Bard's tale of human nature, morality, and judgment transports the audience the Roaring 1920s in Savannah, Georgia and uses the translation to great advantage. Delivered in fantastically rich southern drawls, Shakespeare's text is not only lent a familiarity, but is so masterfully spoken that you might expect the entire cast hailed from Georgia. Led by powerhouse performances from Morgan Dover-Pearl as Isabella and Matt Radford as Angelo, the cast makes a joyous feast of the show. Go for the Roaring 1920s atmosphere, stay for the saucy and solid performances.

I would run out immediately to see this fantastic show!!!

I saw the show on Friday night, when Dr. Paul
Woodruff offered post-play comments.
Jason Amato's restrained set was made up of
hangman's ropes suggesting columns from some
sort of federal courthouse. They reminded me of
the institutions that represent out collective values
(columns), and the crude, messy threats of violence
that actually enforce these lofty ideals (hangman's
ropes). After the play, Dr. Woodruff discussed the
tension between mercy and justice, which lies at
the heart of this play. The set gave form to this
tension. It was great!
Robert Matney's Pompey was a familiar figure to
me. Shakespeare’s pimp was brought to life as a
snake-oil salesman: Shifty, falsely naive, seemingly
gentle and ineffectual, but a ruthless exploiter of
human beings, nonetheless. Matney’s Pompey was
the consummate operator. I got the sense that
when the world ends in a ball of fire, the only
creatures left will be cockroaches and Pompeys.

Only see this show if you want a cast of theatrical felons to ruin any other W.S. comedy for you. They are a cruel, hurtful gang armed with perfect diction, amazing accent skills, and a MASTERY of the comic craft whose sole intent is to undermine future Shakespearean efforts by setting unrealistic standards. Do not watch these actors: Radford, Guion, Matney, Amendola, and Scalise; they epitomize merciless comedy in a play that should have been themed on mercy. Sure, they PRETEND to love you... but 2 or 3 unfulfilling shows down the road you won't be thanking them- you'll be wishing you could go back to being satisfied with "a pretty good show". And don't buy drinks unless you wonder what it's like having red wine shoot out your nose with forced laughter. (sorry about the dress, lady... send the cleaning bill to Radford and Scalise) This show is worth it at 2X the $ but it will make merely 'good' shows taste like chewed newsprint next to kobe beef. Don't. Miss. It.

We immensely enjoyed the performance of Measure for Measure this evening. Given that I know little of Shakespeare, I appreciated the very brief program notes that I reviewed a minute before the lights went down.
Thereafter, the whole storyline was very easy to follow, the performances were completely engaging, and the action of the play proceeded apace with a pleasing mixture of hilarity and drama.
I highly recommend this play for an evening of excellent entertainment.
