One of Broadway’s most neglected masterpieces, the romantic and achingly beautiful A Little Night Music deals with the universal subject of love, in all its wondrous, humorous and ironic forms.
In turn-of-the-century Sweden, middle-aged Fredrik Egerman brings his 18-year-old bride Anne to a play starring his former mistress, Desirée Armfeldt. Soon, Fredrik and Desirée resume their romance, incurring the wrath of her current lover, a pompous Count. The situation culminates in a weekend at a country estate, with Fredrik, Anne, Desirée and the Count in attendance, as well as Fredrik’s son (who is hopelessly in love with Anne), Desirée’s illegitimate daughter, the Count’s manic-depressive wife and the Egerman’s lusty maid. And there, under the summer night, things are set right.

A Little Night Music, while well-known perhaps for being the origin of the popular song "Send in the Clowns" is not performed that often these days. It won several Tony awards (including best musical)...

A Little Night Music, while well-known perhaps for being the origin of the popular song "Send in the Clowns" is not performed that often these days. It won several Tony awards (including best musical) when it premiered in 1973, though it has become a faded hit. There are periodic revivals, but they typically don't last long, so Georgetown's Palace Theater is to be commended for venturing out and performing this. It will not perhaps have as wide an appeal as some musicals, but all the actors do a good job and the sets are very well-done.

A Little Night Music is rarely performed outside of professional theatres these days. Besides the sophistication of the script and the complex, intricate score, the show requires every single performer to be at their best. Although the production at Georgetown's Palace Theatre isn't quite perfect, it succeeds in the places where it counts. Most of the actors do very well (Joe Penrod and Wendy Zaveleta are an ideal Fredrick and Desiree, and Alexa Doggett and Amy Minor shine in potentially thankless roles) and the onstage chamber orchestra is exquisite. As with most community theatres, the design elements are limited (although the costumes are quite lovely) and some of the scene changes are a bit clunky as of opening night (most likely they've gotten better), but the cast and creative team trust the material and handle it with great care and consideration, resulting in a divinely entertaining production of a too-rarely-seen masterwork.

WOW-- what a delightful experience!.. some words that come to mind to describe my enjoyment at the Palace Theater of Sondheim's neglected masterpiece: A Little Night Music--amazing, fun, memorable, delightful, and moving. Please read the other reviews as I am near speechless as to what I might add to their high praises of this wonderful show by a wonderful, talented, dedicated cast under the wonderful and able direction of a wonderful director-Clifford Butler... Oh, I know: The orchestra is extra wonderful under the able direction of Jonathan Borden. The sets are simple and effective. The costumes are lovely, and the singing is simply Delightful. Highly recommended, and in my opinion, well worth the drive from ANYWHERE nearby!

Sit back and relax while you enjoy a fantastic night of music and theater. The singing quality is top-notch, and is as powerful as an opera. The costumes were phenomenal. It is simply amazing what Mary Ellen Butler and Sara De Cuir did with a mixture of dyed wedding dresses from local thrift shops, jackets, and other miscellaneous items. The director keeps the actors moving with intention, so that even the invalid grandmother stands and walks around during her pieces. The set is quite impressive, and appropriate in the setting of the Georgetown Palace Theater. The script is sexy and the dialogue makes you laugh. What better combination for a night of theater? The plot is a bit complicated and so you may prefer to read a copy of the synopsis before it begins for best results. All in all, it was such fun and delightful musical entertainment that both my companion and I are considering a repeat drive to Georgetown from Austin. Way to go, Georgetown Palace and Stephen Sondheim!

This show has impressed me beyond my reason! For years I have seen Palace shows go from good to crap to okay. But this one has blown them all away! Never before have I seen such a wonderful talented cast bring me to tears from laughter, emotion and pure enjoyment. Joe Penrod and Wendy Zavaleta are spectacular! Bradley Acree gave me goosepimples with his beautiful rendition of "Later". While Amy Minor delighted my heart and ear drums with her "Miller's Son". It doesn't stop there. Sara Burke, a Palace favorite, is adorable. David Sray was wonderfully commanding onstage. Jenny Lavery was captivating & real. Nikki Bora was, as always, delightfully entertaining. And Alexa Doggett was so cute as the "beyond her years" Fredrika. Last but certainly not least is the wonderful six Liebeslieder singers. Every time one of there mouths opened to sing it was like a small heavenly chorus. That with an amazing orchestra... Cliff Butler has outdone himself with this cast/show. I recommend it! 5 STARS

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!! The best show I have seen at the Palace so far. The cast was terrific, with truly standout performances by Wendy Zavaleta as Desiree and Joe Penrod...

What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!! The best show I have seen at the Palace so far. The cast was terrific, with truly standout performances by Wendy Zavaleta as Desiree and Joe Penrod as Fredrik. But don't look for any weak links in this cast - there aren't any!
I honestly never really liked the song Send in the Clowns until I heard Ms.Zavaleta sing it today. I had tears in my eyes when she finished - so moving.
This could not have been an easy show to pull off on the Palace stage but I really liked the way the show was staged. The orchestra was wonderful and really added to the experience.
Director Clifford Butler has a nice note in the program about the Palace's decision to stage this show, knowing it would probably not draw in the audiences the way other musicals do. I hope people will go out and see this wonderful show so the Palace can bring more of these gems to their stage.

A Little Night Music is rarely performed outside of professional theatres these days. Besides the sophistication of the script and the complex, intricate score, the show requires every single performer to be at their best. Although the production at Georgetown's Palace Theatre isn't quite perfect, it succeeds in the places where it counts.
