John Evans loves checking out thrift stores in all the cities he visits, a trait which ordinarily wouldn’t be worth including in a comic’s bio like this, any more than citing one’s preference for long walks on the beach. But in John’s case, this tidbit might well merit mention for a couple of reasons, starting with the way it enables us to point out that we’re not just talking about a city or two when he leaves his Minneapolis home-- this guy’s one of the hardest-working, fastest-rising young comics on the circuit, hitting comedy clubs in a different city about 40 weeks each year. That’s a lot of thrift stores. But the main reason to mention this is more metaphorical: The same keen eye and great taste that John brings to transforming old, used duds into sharp, hip fashion statements he also applies to his stand-up. He’s a similar connoisseur of comedy, and as such, is acutely discerning about what ideas and language will make for smart, fully original stand-up material, and what will merely constitute the old, the generic, the uninspired--stuff he avoids as resolutely as he’d avoid buying a hideous old shirt dotted with suspicious stains. These standards and smarts have started to be recognized in important comedy circles. John’s moving rather swiftly from feature act status to headlining some of the nation’s top comedy clubs (like Cap City), and last summer, he was selected by the Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival in Montreal--widely considered the biggest, most prestigious comedy event in the world--to perform on their “New Faces” shows.
