These D.C. satirists did roast and lampoon,
Wits sharper than a whaler's harpoon.
Their targets were of every scale.
They gave us laughs and gave 'em hell.
They hurled their barbs and flung their jibes,
And the audience responded with jocular vibes.
A Delores, a Bari, a Michael and two Mikes
Were hitting their targets like avenging shrikes.
Howard Breitbart was smooth on the piano,
Helping the cast to "book 'em Dano!"
For so many years, they've mocked our leaders,
Skewering the hapless, leaving only bleeders.
Susan Boyle, the Somali Pirates, Oprah and even the "Pet Ba-rock" and the Bailout all caught musical flack. Adulterous Gov. Mark Stanford was recognized with "Stanford and Sin" (a.k.a. "Sanford & Son.") Even the Aggies took a shot to the delight of the "orange nation."

This well-known political comedy satire group -- The Capitol Steps -- has been making us laugh for 26 years, and they did not disappoint this past Friday night. The five members and pianist performed in front of the curtain of Dell Hall. (The Lyric Opera set was in place behind the curtain for its Sat. night opening.)
Each of the "Steps" are excellent solo performers in his/her own right, but the combination of humor and harmony makes their show particularly unique. The witty musical jabs at Democrats, Republicans and Independents were indeed funny. But personally, I thought the other vignettes were even better, one noting all the prescription drugs and syndromes advertised on TV was especially clever. Hilarious? More often than not. Off color? Well, so are many of the politician's situations now days!

An evening spent in the company of the Capitol Steps is always an evening spent well. Bringing their equal opportunity ridicule to the Long Center, the Capitol Steps smirked and sang their way across the political spectrum. The group of five assisted by an extraordinary pianist (who sadly did not get his own biography in the program) covered the topics of the year and made copious use of the gifts that keep on giving: Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. The group continues to succeed because of the singing and acting talents of the performers but also because the songs are slick and clever. All levels of comedy (high, low, in the gutter) are ably represented and, perhaps best of all, none of the jokes goes on for too long. Brevity is the soul of wit, after all.

The Capitol Steps are a well-known sketch comedy troupe who specialize in rewriting the lyrics of familiar songs to comment humorously on the politics and political figures of the day. Most of the songs are short, so if you don't like one the next song is a short wait. I found the lyrics to be mostly clever and funny if sometimes predictable. The performers were all very able including the expert accompanist. All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening of entertainment.
