Emmy Award-winning actress Elaine Bromka reveals a gallery of intimate portraits of three remarkable, radically different First Ladies—Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon, and Betty Ford. We discover each at a threshold moment in her life, and learn the personal cost of what Pat Nixon called “the hardest unpaid job in the world.”

      I might even quip “instant tea,” since this one-woman play and tour-de force Elaine Bromka immediately dialed me back 30 to-40 years or more to my UPI/Houston reporting days, when I actually encountered some of these First Ladies and their husbands. First, this comment: This show deserves a full house, every performance. Performed without intermission with a running time of about 75-80 minutes, you can easily have dinner before or afterwards. And it’s a program that deserves post-show conversation. Don’t expect Lady Bird, Pat and Betty to simultaneously sit for a hot cup of leafy brew. But do expect to laugh, even if it is sometimes sympathetic laughter. And do expect to learn, if you are of a younger generation, a bit of history about these women and the flawed leaders that they loved and (somehow) supported.       Normally, I am not enthralled with one-person plays, but the exceptional, Emmy award-winning actress Elaine Bromka and "Tea For Three" changed my mind. This creative, entertaining show -- written by Bromka and Eric H. Weinberger -- gives insights into the lives of three First Ladies--Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford--as they are ending their White House "tenure" and reflecting on their political lives. Ms. Bromka transformed herself, not only visually with wigs, clothing and mannerisms, but with speech pattern and accent, into each of the Ladies. The intimate and acoustically excellent Rollins Theatre at the Long Center is the venue. Collapse

      One of the best single-cast shows I've seen, "Tea for Three" made me want to learn more about the first ladies presented. Ms. Bromka does a wonderful job capturing the subtle nuances that distinguished each woman, and makes you understand and appreciate each of their "stories." Collapse

      Political Austin will love seeing Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon & Betty Ford on the Rollins Theater stage, the Long Center – which just happens to overlook Lady Bird Lake. A nice touch allowing for duel enjoyment; see an Emmy Award-winning actress, Elaine Bromka, beautifully portray a beloved, and familiar, Texas icon and recall that Lady Bird’s trail blazing beautification efforts helped create a beloved Austin icon: the Hike & Bike Trail. “Tea for Three,” a one-woman show, portrays first ladies recalling life as a political spouse with all the attendant heartaches and opportunities. Pat Nixon’s brutal early life in the depression must have given her the remarkable ability to endure President Nixon’s downfall while Betty Ford’s own ambitions to be a dancer provided her with a sympathetic understanding of the culture changes in women’s roles in the 1970s. Go see this thoughtful, entertaining performance and stay for the public discussion with Ms. Bromka after the show – it’s a winner. Collapse
