The actors of ZACH Theatre's "Spelling Bee" make the most of a "why did the writers make this a musical?" play by demonstrating excellent comedic timing and a solid commitment to character. The six adult actors playing students were especially believable in their portrayals, embodying their characters with quirky physical mannerisms and hilarious facial expressions. Although the actors could have easily gone overboard in their portrayals, they strike the right balance between real character and caricature. The interactive portion of the show adds a fresh twist, and the audience members chosen to participate embraced their new-found roles as entertainers. Unfortunately, this show suffers from the recent trend in theater to make every show a musical regardless of its value to the production. The cast sings with great enthusiasm, but the quality of their voices can't make up for the fact that the majority of the songs are contrived and bring the pace of the show to a screeching halt.

Spelling Bee is a cute and often riotous show at ZACH. Directed by the unrivaled Dave Steakley, the production, which I saw in previews, often left me rolling in my seat, but a little disappointed in others. Great choreography from Adam Roberts left a smile on my face, very suggestive of the Broadway choreo. Standouts included the always great Jill Blackwood as Ms. Peretti, and Andrew Cannata as Chip. My favorite was easily Amy Downing as Logan, though, who played the role with such energy, humor, and heart-breaking innocence that I forgot she wasn’t a child at the Bee.
The rest of the cast fit their roles, but often times forgot the childish factor when they began to sing. Direction and sound were great, but I was also a bit confused with the lighting by Jason Amato (of whom I almost always love) which made odd transitions between song and scene and projected an annoying circle of light with words onto the stage. I plan on seeing the show again when it’s in its stride. Recommend!

I loved Spelling Bee when I saw it on Broadway and was thrilled to see it on ZACH's season calendar. Austin has so many talented actors and it was great to see them showcased in this fun show. I thought Amy Downing and Jose Villareal were truly amazing in their portrayals of Logan and William!! I found them the most believable as middle schoolers.
I attended the Friday night preview and thought that there were times that the energy level wasn't quite where it needed to be. I chalk that up to the fact that it was the final preview. I highly recommend the show - but keep in mind it is truly not appropriate for young children.

I found myself fondly remembering my own 10 year old self and thoroughly enjoying the show. Each of the characters while somewhat stereotypical were lovingly fleshed out and performed with great nuance by this top notch cast. My favorites were William Barfe (pronounced bar-fay) played by Jose Villarreal and Olive Ostrovsky played by Lucy Jennings. The cast also expertly incorporates audience members and improv making the experience all the more exciting. The score is not musically complex nor the story complicated but Spelling Bee proved to be a fun night out.

It seemed odd at first, but Zach’s “Spelling Bee” followed the Broadway version casting template; adult actors in the role of children and some actors in multiple roles. Yet, as the show progressed, it became harder to envision child actors portraying these quirky characters with atypical back-stories. It’s the gradual fleshing out of the characters that make “Spelling Bee” a fun and gratifying night out. The Austin area has an incredible pool of performing artists: as William Barfee (“Bar-fey!”), Jose Villarreal blended nerdy-arrogance-swagger with a smidge of vulnerability that made his nasally challenged character a crowd favorite, Eve Alonza was spot-on with her depiction of the over-achieving Asian phenom undergoing an identity crisis, and the extremely talented Jill Blackwood was hilarious as the well-dressed, slightly awkward, serial Spelling Bee coordinator re-living her past spelling glory. Zach’s production of Spelling Bee is highly recommended for teens to adults.

I enjoyed pretty much all aspects of this show. Many of the songs are not memorable but are delivered with aplomb and energy.
Overall, no one really stood out which in this case is a good thing as all the actors were strong- I believed these adult actors were kids. They worked together as a tight group in their singing and movement.
The show has lots of funny moments but manages to pull of poignant moments such as the strongest song delivered by Lucy Jennings, Jill Blackwood & Bernard Davis who is a wonderful newcomer to Zach with a fantastic singing voice.
The show fits in how parents can be overly strict, or the opposite of parents missing but doesn't hit you over the head with it or dwell in it.
We learn the background of each kid with all sorts of "morals to the story" from the lonely kid who finds a friend, to the overachiever who discovers it's not all it's cracked up to be, to a kid just happy to be there.
There are many nice touches but the modern references were a bit much.

Attention to detail and a plethora of talent is a mainstay at Zach Scott, and Spelling Bee is no exception. From the spot-on set to the cast of adults who feel free to just cut loose and PLAY, this show was a treat to be a part of.
I found myself wearing an unavoidable smile throughout the experience, where I was transported back to some of my own grade school days when goofball friends, pre-teen awkwardness, and overzealous parents were a common theme.
In terms of production value, the cast creates memorable moments during feature songs - a noteworthy/touching performance by Lucy Jennings as Olive in "The I Love You Song" - but what kept me engaged was watching the cast to see what they would do in moments they were NOT in the spotlight. I saw kids being kids. It was as if I was at the playground, just outside of the chain-linked fence, experiencing the youthful energy that only a child's whimsical mind can produce. I got to dream, laugh, and SPELL right along with the cast!

Life is pandemonium! is my favorite song from this excellent, well-acted, and well-cast show now playing at the Zach.
The excellent script, quirky music and lyrics, combine with a very talented cast to produce an hysterical "I-can't-stop-laughing" experience. The adult actors playing a group of young children at a Spelling Bee competition are totally believable. There are audience participation elements that make you feel like you are actually attending a real live contest featuring the children of friends or neighbors.
It has tender moments, drama, comedy, as well as compassion. It manages to visit in two short hours the past, the present, and the future and to firmly ground the now in joyous celebration of the human condition.
Alas, there is no sex but there are plenty of hilarious sexual references.

Although the actors were all adults they were very convincing as children. I loved how the program featured childhood pictures of the cast and company. It is funny how easy it is for the audience to be catapulted back into reliving childhood memories. The credit is due to top-notch acting, singing, and directing by Dave Steakley. The play was an upbeat musical for the most part, although some of the songs exposed the dark underbellies of the lives of some children whose parents expect too much or are unavailable.
Since I was initially unclear, I want to mention that it is a play for adults, not for children. I hope you enjoy the show with its several surprises, which include contemporary references!
