The Muses III: Memories of a House is a collaborative piece that centers around a home and the different people who have lived their lives inside it. While traveling around this beautiful house, audience members will happen upon moments in many individuals lives, blurring the line between real life and the theatre. From photographs taken of the house, Austin playwrights bring each room within the house to life in a different way drawing inspiration from the Eugene Ionesco quote "Only the ephemeral is of lasting value."  The production includes work from 12 austin playrights, 18 actors and 5 directors, and is set at the home of Pam and Phil Fletcher.

      I like the concept of having theatre in a house and going room to room (and outside) to see different snippets. When you have this many too see (12) it means some uneveness in the writing, acting or direction. For example, 2 of them I had no idea what was going on in terms of the story and I am not sure if it was the writing or acting or direction. 2 of them I also had a hard time seeing the actors. I would have also liked it if all the stories related more directly to the house (some did while others didn't seem to at all). But overall it was a very unique experience - I really enjoyed Swallowing Gum, Brownies and Bloody Mary. Collapse

      *Forget the proverbial “fourth wall” between actors and audiences. Muses III, Vestige Group’s latest installment is theater up close and personal. I’m talking arm’s length or less. Your mouth will water for the fresh-baked brownies. Pool water splashes on you. A cluttered portico (and life) pains you with unfinished projects...or relationships. *The “sets” are different rooms indoors and out of an exotically decorated – think African masks and fabrics kaleidoscope – Westlake home, courtesy of Pam & Phil Friday. *You’re less a patron and more of a fly on the wall, an eaves-dropping, unseen friend; a shocked voyeur; perhaps a character in one of the unfolding tales capably told by a highly polished cast. * I’m familiar with drawing room dramas and parlor plays, but this takes the traditional theater experience to a whole new level. No, not for everyone. These playlets, from 11 local playwrights, 18 actors, four directors plus crew members and guides, is probably PG-16. (more) Collapse

      A vicarious adventure into a beautiful home in Westlake Hills yielded a worthwhile evening of entertainment even if the theatrical experience sometimes missed a few beats. Gorgeous writing set... Expand

      A vicarious adventure into a beautiful home in Westlake Hills yielded a worthwhile evening of entertainment even if the theatrical experience sometimes missed a few beats. Gorgeous writing set against the backdrop of this exotic decor was enough to keep our hardy band of twelve thespian nomads humming. Buried secrets, burned brownies, blue balls and and a baptism into intimacy added up to a scheherazade of stories borne of people interacting with place (even if some of the actors forgot their environment and the twelve people staring up their nose hairs.) The non sequiturs of a household cat wandering through the scene, or a room full of odd costumes or a stranger lounging on a couch along the way only lent more texture to an event worthy of an evening's adventure to the other side of the tracks. I only wished there had been more of a linkage between episodes other than our entertaining guide. Kudos to the VG theater for putting together a memorable group of local writers and actors Collapse

      As you wonder through the house, you get tastes of different memories, different lives. The cast and direction of Muses III was good. The intimacy of the setting allows the audience to capture the intimacy of the memories portrayed. As in any performance piece that includes separately written scenes, there are some that touch you more than others. This is the case with Muses. 'Brownies' was my favorite and moved me to tears. When you have this many too see (12) it means some uneveness in the writing, acting or direction.
