Alan Aychbourn's writing is ingenious. He uses his characters so well and we are treated to laugh after laugh at their expense. I loved the interactions between Fiona (Louise Martin) and Frank (Scot Friedman) and I thought Terry (Lori Z. Cordova) was exceptionally funny. At times, the over-intensity of some of the acting pulled focus from the comedy, but all in all this was an evening of great entertainment. Definitely a must see.

How the Other Half Loves is one of the best productions that City Theatre has put on- and that's saying something. The play is about two couples- the Phillips and the Fosters- the spouse in one, Bob Phillips is having an affair with the spouse of the other, Fiona Foster- with a third couple, the Featherstones, caught in the middle. We see the Phillips and Fosters and get to know the way their marriages are working. They share the same stage and sometimes the same props, but are clearly supposed to be in their own homes and unaware of each other- the way that was pulled off was very clever. In addition, toward the end of the first act, both of the troubled couples agree to have the Featherstones over for dinner, though the Featherstones are clearly supposed to be in different houses at the same time. The acting was uniformly satisfying, and the staging keeps one's attention throughout. Derek Jones was particularly good as the working-class Bob Phillips. Highly recommended.

But it was the play itself taking center stage. So, well written! Two houses, three couples and a one-of-a-kind style of writing that allows no imitation. A perfect match of play and personae. Well done!

British accents can be a difficult thing for a Texas troupe, but this entire cast made me think they were native Brits! And the ensemble nature of the performers was perfect, with each "couple" perfectly suited for each other, creating an amazing onstage chemistry.
Of particular note was the working class couple portrayed by Lori Cordova and Derek Jones. What a great rapport between those two, showing a deep tension in their marriage, while also revealing some tenderness they have for each other.
Scot Friedman is hilarious as Frank, the bumbling boss. His expressions and physical humor are just spot on.
Kudos as well to Tyler Jones and Jenny Keto as the unsuspecting "third" couple, and Louise Martin as Fiona.
