Film noir meets 1940s Hollywood glamour in this Tony-award winning musical from Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity) and Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H). A frazzled novelist struggles to maintain his artistic vision as he adapts his hard-boiled detective novel to the silver screen. Faced with mounting pressures from a conniving producer and his own demons, he finds help from a surprising ally: his book's central character. With a dynamic, jazz-inspired score and riotous humor, City of Angels bounces between two worlds of intrigue with spirited musical flair. Featuring Equity guest artist David M. Long.

City of Angels is a clever show with a fun nod to film noir. The score isn't particularly notable with some songs feeling completely unnecessary. There are exceptions, such as the fantastic act one closer where author and creation confront each other, but this is musical where the script is the star. This production manages to be very entertaining, with sharp performances from David Long and Jamie Goodwin in the lead roles, but the space proves to be a liability at times, causing serious sight line problems. Ultimately, a fun production of a little seen musical from the early 90s, performed by an enjoyable cast and an incredibly tight band, that manages to sound bigger than it really is.

From the beginning notes of the Angel City Four quartet, expectations are set for hearing some very fine singing. Without disappointment--Jamie Goodwin, Sara Gay, Jacob Trussell, Kimberly Gates, and David Long were stand-outs of this talented group of students and equity actors. The multi-level set separates the "real" life story(up on platforms)from the screenplay story on ground level. Wisecracking, deadpan delivery voice overs and frequent witty, humorous song lyrics add much to the style of the story as do the wonderful costumes. The play is full of femme fatales, humor, and murder. The challenge is the two intersecting stories and intersecting types of characters. Attention must be paid to appreciate it and the actors, staging, and costumes help the audience sort out this detective puzzle.

This musical is a complicated, sexy, interesting, clever production. Easy to understand why it is a Tony Award winner, but be forewarned: Read the playbill before the show begins. Otherwise, you may have a little difficulty understanding the plots interplay with stage reality and fictional action.
The music isn't exactly something you will sing to yourself later, but the show is written by three highly acclaimed writers, and the lyrics are simply amazing. The musical number "The Tennis Song" alone is worth the price of admission. (At $20 a seat, still a bargain!)
The trio of equity actors -- Sarah Gay, Jamie Goodwin, David Long -- is superb, and most of the students do a fine job as well. Jacob Trussell is a spectacular standout as the movie mogul. Lots of physical and vocal energy.
The Mary Moody Northen Theatre on the St. Edward's U. campus is in the round. Spaces are used with expert precision as minimalist set pieces are moved quickly in and out between scenes. (more)

Well, not gumshoe "Sam Spade," but rather private eye "Stone" (David M. Long) and his creator "Stine," (Jamie Goodwin). But just as satisfying to the eye and the ear.

If you like 1940s detective novels, film noir, great musicals plus humor and a bit of mind-bending entertainment, you'll love this show. If you don't, you'll still admire this production because of the unusual staging -- in the square/round with three elevated acting platforms and a fourth with a 10-piece band -- the dead-on period costumes, right down to the men's sock garters, superb hair styles and make-up, singing and choreography.
Frankly, I was "blown away" by the fact that the three equity actors (Sarah Gay is the rich vamp")and student cast could pull this off in that space!
Of course a few other characters are "blown away," as well, in amusing style as the harried novelist battles hard-charging movie producer Buddy Fidler (Jacob Trussell) in moving his fictional P.I. to the silver screen.
