“HEAVEN ON BROADWAY! What occurs shortly after 8 p.m. feels so fresh that you stop to catch your breath.”
– Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“BLOWS THE SEQUINS OFF MOST BROADWAY MUSICALS!”
– Entertainment Weekly
In an empty theatre, on a bare stage, casting for a new Broadway musical is almost complete. For 17 dancers, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It’s what they’ve worked for – with every drop of sweat, every hour of training, every day of their lives. It’s the one opportunity to do what they’ve always dreamed – to have the chance to dance. This is A Chorus Line , the musical for everyone who’s ever had a dream and put it all on the line. Winner of nine Tony® Awards, including “Best Musical” and the Pulitzer Prize for drama, this singular sensation is the longest-running American Broadway musical ever. Now A Chorus Line returns. Come meet the new generation of Broadway’s best.

This production of the modern day classic is incredible. The Dancers have 100% perfect timing, every kick is at the same height, each arm out at the exact same angle - This is the epitome of a professional dance company. The singing and acting was right on too. I'm not generally a fan of musicals but I have to say the Chorus Line is now at the top of my very short list of favs. Check it out at the Bass, You'll just love it.

A Chorus Line is both a show and a reflection on shows. Specifically, about people auditioning for shows and what they expect to get out of doing them. When the 16 finalists are picked after an initial audition for a dancing chorus, the director, Zach, wants to hear the rest of the prospects talk about themselves- how they got into dancing, and their hopes and dreams. The way the actors pull of the characters, and their interactions with each other and Zach, is delightful. During this whole process, the audience feels the hope and anticipation for getting into a show, and the thrill that comes with acceptance- something to which I can definitely relate. Towards the end, "What I Did for Love" the characters sing about how they can only go one day at a time and not regret the risks of pursuing their passion if it does not work out. And if the finale, "One" does not put a big smile on your face, I don't know what will. See Chorus Line, a fine example of what theatre should be.

This production of A Chorus Line is not to be missed. There is something about watching an earnest group of people talk believably about their lives, while singing and dancing in perfect unison. It is not often that a production keeps my attention from start to finish, and this production of A Chorus Line held my rapt attention for the whole two hours ( sans intermission.) The songs were pitch perfect, the dance moves exact and the stories were heart wrenching. Particular standouts to me : Maggie ( played by Standin Paige Faure) had a haunting honesty with her song, Val ( Kristen Martin) was a spunky joy to watch during her Dance Ten, Looks Three, and Kristine ( Hilary Michael Thompson) had quirky energy and unique take on the Sing! Number which had me laughing out loud. See this show.

Bravo to the cast of A Chorus Line and Bravo to Broadway Across America Austin and Texas Performing Arts for bringing this wonderful experience to Austin! This was my first time ever seeing the production in any form (theatre, film, etc.). I entered into the experience being familiar with two songs and very little else. I left feeling alive, full of song, and wanting to fan kick my way out of Bass Concert Hall!

I give this touring version of “Chorus Line” a big, fat “E” for being Exciting, Energetic, Entertaining, and not the least of my adjectives, Emotional. The athleticism and precision timing of the performers are a jaw-dropping Experience in itself. Those finely tuned bodies are Easy to watch, but the back stories of the aspiring troupe members are painful ... and revealing. The god-like dance captain shows them no quarter, exposing his own personal quest . . . and loss.
Part of the pain is (and should be) personal to any audience member who has ever reached for the stars, whether they got a handful of stardust or fell short. And one finds himself asking, “Do I do it for the art? The money? For the personal satisfaction? The glory and the fame?” Introspection, rejection, competition, bonding, acceptance – all are on display on the Bass stage, just as they often are in our daily lives.
This venerable show, wonderfully re-staged by Choreographer Baayork Lee and Directed by Bob (more)

The first Broadway touring company show I saw was “A Chorus Line” more than 25 years ago. It is just as entertaining now as it was then. The Marvin Hamlish music and Edward Kleban lyrics are still as exciting and still make me want to sing along . . . well hum along. And I’m still humming the day after the opening performance.
The dancing is great, of course, and the stories of each dancer auditioning will touch your heart. You just can’t help but root for your favorites to make their dreams come true and win their place on line. The amazing thing about this classic show, which debuted in 1975, is that it holds up so well today. It is performed on a basically bare stage, except for some huge rotating mirrors and plastic panels. The final number is glitzed with spectacular costumes.
One caveat: The two-hour performance has no intermission.
