In the Heights is a show reminiscent of Rent - a show about the inhabitants of a New York neighborhood trying to make their way through the world and realize a dream. This ensemble show has energetic music that bounces between hip hop/rap and latin with great choreography danced by an extremely talented cast. The strength of the show is in its ensemble numbers. The first half of the first act is almost all expository; we get a cute solo song from several different characters, some of which are rather stereotypical stock characters. The plot doesn't really begin to move until almost an hour into the show, but by the end of the first act you'll be salsa dancing out to the lobby for intermission. The second act moves much more quickly, with more ensemble numbers and plot points that begin to tug on the heartstrings. The vocal performances are overall very satisfying. Go see this show for the award-winning music and dancing, and don't worry about plot.

Not usually being one who is a fan of musicals I found that I thoroughly enjoyed In the Heights. The music was fun and contemporary - and every word was understandable - which is one of the reasons why I tend to shy away from musicals. The choreography was really fun - I felt like heading straight to Copa for an all-night Salsa Fiesta once it was over-plus I really loved the movement/dance between scenes that expressed the passage of time - so so Cool!
The performers were great and the singing was awesome - the lead actor who plays Usnavi just melted my heart. Great show for the whole family!

Although the plot is not complex, the acting is believable, and exciting. The dance is dynamic, and the songs( although not individual showstoppers)are beautiful and joyful. Do many people have the experience of living in the same place for an extended period of time so that you feel like a family? That is what this musical involves – the trials, tribulations, ups, and downs, of everyday life. The set doesn’t change at all during the show, perhaps reflecting the stability and permanence of seeing the same corner every day. The characters have a push-pull relationship with the neighborhood and feel alternatively trapped, and safe in a nest of family and friends. Knowing Spanish is helpful as a good one-third of the songs are in Spanish with no translation. If the world of theater comes to this, is it arrogant to ask for subtitles as they do in the movies, or super-titles as they do in the opera? I absolutely hate not understanding what the characters are saying, and I thought I understood Spanish! Nevertheless, the rap and salsa make for a unique theater experience that was very pleasant overall.

In the Heights No wonder In the Heights won 4 Tonys including Best Musical. It’s really a universal cheer for hope, home and dreams. The music is rich and kaleidoscopic, from jazz to hip-hop all within New York’s 181st Street A-train stop to the G.W. Bridge. The Sultry Salsas to Caribbean dances feel like they may have jumped off the street. This musical is high energy and very engaging from beginning to end. A must-see: it’s still running on Broadway and now touring fewer than 20 cities–and Austin gets the treat.

I should rephrase that. I love GOOD musicals. There’s something extraordinarily magical about it when the theatricality of the music, voices, dance, sets, costumes and lights come together in just the right way. This is what happened last night in Bass Concert Hall. In The Heights won the Tony for best new musical in 2008 and there’s no doubt why. The characters and fresh, three dimensional and entertaining. What’s more- they’re sympathetic and engaging. You care about their lives and what’s going to happen to them. I will admit, not much happens in this story. Plot is mostly missing but I didn’t care. I was too busy enjoying the performances of Arielle Jacobs as Nina. It’s so rare to see this combination of skill and honesty in performance. I would never get tired of hearing her sing. Also standing out were Kyle Beltran as Usnavi and Shaun Taylor-Corbett as Sonny. Austin is fortunate to be a stop on this tour so don’t miss out!

I went into the theatre not knowing what kind of show this was going to be. Two hours & ten minutes later, I left with the feeling of light and sweet, like the coffee that was dispensed at the local bodega by the amiable lead of the show Usnavi, played by Kyle Beltran, a physical and vocal super talent. There is no huge emotional tension in the show but there is an emotional heart of the show which is the ambivalence felt by the neighborhoods local characters. Simple plots of struggles with finances, family, overdue bills, dating, daily troubles. The set even reflected the not so gritty tone of the show. The Washington Bridge loomed in the background, the old brick building with all the doors and windows flung open had an inviting appeal while the bouncy latino beats were permeating the audience. A sweet grandmother Abuela Claudia played by Elise Santora, saucy haircutters, a lothario cousin of Usnavi, a cast of fantastic voices and talent. Sweet and light. A treat & go see.

This is your basic three-star musical. The music isn't brilliant but it is pretty good. The story is thin but it is enough to carry the show. The actors aren't all fantastic but the leads are quite good - Kyle Beltran as Usnavi, Genny Lis Padilla as Clara, Shaun Taylor-Corbett as Sonny and Rogelio Douglas as Benny stand out - and the rest are good enough.
So why do I give it the extra star? Two reasons:
First, it is a visual feast. The set and costumes are delightful. And the dancing absolutely transports you. Second, the show has a wonderful youthful energy. The concept and the execution brim over with enthusiasm. The music is Latin mixed with hip-hop. The dancing is modern ballet mixed with breakdancing. The lyrics are a mix of Spanish and English, and I did not always understand them. But I had no trouble following the story and knowing the gist of every song. I definitely recommend this show, as long as you are not expecting Sondheim. (Be prepared for a long first act.)

I enjoyed the energy of this show. The dancers were fun, talented, and seemingly possessed of endless vitality. The songs were interesting though few will have you singing or humming them as you leave the theater. The main actor's rapping was good and the lines are witty. I liked the relationships between the people and many simple times like when two were looking at old pictures. Though there is much lively action, there are also a lot of sentimental happenings that bring you back to the importance of community.

Vibrant, alive, and almost continually moving! The 4th of July weekend in this close community is full of joy, heartbreak, and dreams. The spirited cast leads the audience through many fast moving scenes composed of clever lyrics and a blend of sights and sounds for the eyes and ears--great voices singing and dancing to salsa, jazz, rap, merengue, and Broadway styled songs. The set, full of details depicting the barrio including a grand George Washington Bridge, has many levels, which are used effectively as actors continually move and dance in and out. Don't just think the show is all youthful exuberance. The quiet songs and moments tug at the heartstrings. Go and enjoy spending some time in the Heights. You'll leave lighthearted and hopeful.
