      Come and see Spring Awakening. If you have conflicting plans, change them. This is profound theatre with amazing music more than it is a very good musical. One week only, Austin. See it!

      Obviously not a show for kids, teenagers might find some important life lessons on display here, though parents should be sure to talk to your teens about the themes in the play before bringing them... Expand

      Obviously not a show for kids, teenagers might find some important life lessons on display here, though parents should be sure to talk to your teens about the themes in the play before bringing them to the show. Also, it’s important to come into this production with an open mind, for those afraid of homosexuality, talk of child abuse, or underage sexuality will find it hard to sit through the production. If you come in with the right mindset, you will be left with a show you won’t soon forget, with moments of tenderness and sorrow the likes of which you won’t find in any other show in town...       Wedekind, who wrote the 1891 German play upon which Spring Awakening is built, subtitled his work "a children's tragedy" and it certainly is. Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's creative reinvention of the controversial play recalls all the anger, sadness and longing of the original while managing to infuse a sense of almost hopeful resilience. The cast must lead the audience through a dark and twisted landscape and does so with a realism that demands attention. Two performances shine. Taylor Trensch as the underdog Moritz blazes his way through two showstoppers "The Bitch of Living" and "Don't Do Sadness." Steffi D as Ilse captivates with each entrance, meandering in and out of the light like a haunting presence. Her interaction with Moritz was the standout of Act II. Overall, a solid cast giving a solid performance. Even the plot racing toward the end doesn't detract from this refreshingly modern interpretation of a classic. A must see, but definitely for adults.
