Sarah Vowell has turned her gimlet eye — and razor-sharp tongue — toward everything from her father's homemade (and life-sized) cannon and her obsession with the "Godfather" films, to the New Hampshire primary and her Cherokee ancestors' forced march on the Trail of Tears. Vowell is best known for her monologues and documentaries for public radio's This American Life.

      Sarah Vowell is smart. Anyone who can make a living traveling the country and giving lectures on history and contemporary social observations is a pretty bright person. Vowell's intelligence and wit... Expand

      Sarah Vowell is smart. Anyone who can make a living traveling the country and giving lectures on history and contemporary social observations is a pretty bright person. Vowell's intelligence and wit that brought her success as an author and as a speaker in various venues was clearly on display last Friday night. She primarily talked about topics relating to her latest book, "The Wordy Shipmates." The perspectives on important historical figures such as John Winthrop and John Cotton makes one see history differently. Toward the end, she took questions, and the last question was what she thought the best and worst presidents were, and she replied that the best and worst were often the same person, and used Lyndon Johnson as an example, and pointed out that our country in general can be both great and dishonorable (paraphrasing). A very entertaining night. Collapse

      “It’s Friday night and it’s time for Puritans.” This is what the quick-witted wordsmith Sarah Vowell says from behind the Paramount’s center podium. Armed with a stack of essays from the NY Times and her latest effort, The Wordy Shipmates, Vowell’s reading emphasizes an obsession with the humanity of American history. It’s her ability to acutely diagnose historical people as just that – people – that makes her work delightful, regardless of subject matter. Collapse
