Duke Ellington was one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music, and was widely considered one of the 20th century’s best known American musicians. Mr. Ellington is best remembered for the 3,000+ songs he composed during his lifetime.

Hear your Austin Symphony and the Duke Ellington Orchestra with Freda Payne perform such standards as “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo,” “Solitude,” and many more!

      Accompanying my friend as a last minute date, I didn't know what to expect when the orchestra began but I'll never forget it. Its a totally different experience watching top notch musicians in a live performance as they improvise together and play some of the greatest and complicated music written. Usually when I hear live bands in the dives, the sound can be muddy and sloppy. This orchestra sounds clean and sharp and I especially enjoyed "Caravan." The vocalist was also an engaging entertainer but I wish she sang more songs then she did. The horns were featured a lot and did some crazy and humorous bits. The crowd was not at all snooty and I saw quite a mix in ages enjoying the music together. Why isn't this kind of music played any more? I felt and heard all the glamour of a past age come to wonderful life. I plan to buy their CDs and maybe do some research on Duke Ellington. Collapse

      An enthralling evening of music. I don't usually gush. Everyone of the solo instrumentalists had chops to die for and each tune transported me to wonderfully different places and emotions. Without a program it was hard to know who was who but a clarinet player was especially exciting. He had the crowd on the edge of the seats.The ensemble was tight, clean and dynamic! The vocalist Freda Payne, also a fabulous musician used an amazing array of colors in her vocal shadings and phrases even when her voice showed some fatigue. The only reason I give this show 4.5 stars is because she left us wanting more. She only sang about 6 songs. But great evening and Ellington would be proud! Collapse
