Preparation for Home Entertainment 2009 has been going on right under our noses for months. Audio interviews have been chronicling the experiences of a fascinating spectrum of our neighbors in their own homes and community centers.

A musical dinner theatre performance for all generations; Aunt Zadie and friends entertain while talkin' bout entertainment in Blackland. Familiar as a game of checkers or a Game Boy - entertainment has never looked so good.

Joe Cooks! Catering is easily accessible @ the following locations:

*Limited number of tickets for $30 By reservation only: Call 940-2315 or 472-3105 to get a show and meal (oops, I mean deal) of a lifetime!

It is beautifully written and thoughtful. He says "Home Entertainment 2009 is a lovely, loving tribute to the Eastside's Blackland neighborhood and playtime past. Leticia Rodriguez has invited us into that history and this community and is welcoming and warming. By making us feel so at home here, she opens us up to see this neighborhood as the home of others. With the cookies and gelato, with the singing, with the feel of the open air, with the setting of the sun, we are brought into this community and made to belong.       The stars Saturday night were big and bright deep in the heart of Austin as we feasted on a scrumptious dinner in Joe Cooks! neighborly backyard while enjoying a fabulous show. Performance Encounter’s backyard theater production at Joe Cook’s is one of those rare experiences that makes one happy to call Austin home. Through a series of vignettes, ‘Home Entertainment 2009’, warmly remembers life and growing up ‘back in the day’ in Austin’s Blackland neighborhood. Entertaining and informative with an engaging cast, actor Gina Houston’s portrayal of Aunt Zadie, an aging African American urban pioneer, is particularly wonderful. Director/Producer Leticia Rodriguez has captured the voices of past and present in a play incorporating music, children’s games, origami, and a community-building dessert sharing cookies and sorbet. It could have gone on longer and no one would have minded. Collapse

      I had the pleasant experience of attending Home Entertainment this past Saturday. The show was wonderful, the stories were warm and the actors portrayed them with the humility and sincerity. The venue was intimate and the food was quite delicious. I brought my girlfriend along and she loved it too! If your looking for a fun activity to do from June 4-6 I would highly recommend this event. Collapse

      Having lived in Blackland for the past 31 years, its easy to take for granted the day-to-day encounters with a menagerie of neighbors who celebrate weddings, Juneteenth and new babies; mourn... Expand

      Having lived in Blackland for the past 31 years, its easy to take for granted the day-to-day encounters with a menagerie of neighbors who celebrate weddings, Juneteenth and new babies; mourn funerals; argue about politics; and trade recipes and garden starts. Leticia Rodriquez has rendered a vivid shapshot of this tiny community by conducting interviews with residents and condensing the essence into the dialog of four characters. Their descriptions of their “home entertainment” become our entertainment that we digest along with some super food by Joe Cook Catering. Joe and Carol have christened their new, backyard patio with this production and we hope to see more down-home events at this venue in the future. Congratulations to Leticia, her cast and crew – and to the Cooks for this fun and filling neighborhood coming-out party. Collapse

      I just returned from watching a fantastic dinner theater show and I have to share with your readers.---Do not miss Home Entertainment, Performance Encounters' latest production at Joe Cooks! on E. MLK Blvd!! It will be one of the most pleasant, heart-warming, thought-provoking theater experiences you will have this year! Out under the stars we feasted on a scrumptious dinner provided by Joe Cooks! including, salmon, pecan- crusted chicken, a salad of field greens, roasted veggies and freshly made potato salad. (It's also BYOB.) The audience was treated to cookies, sorbet and origami folding along with the great music, fine singing and great performances by the wonderful cast. We learned about the Blackland community of east Austin while in the Blackland community. I had never heard of it before. Leticia Rodriguez has truly put together a very unique, informative and thoroughly enjoyable show. I hope many Austinites get to enjoy it. Collapse
