Nunsense

Nunsense is about five of 19 surviving “Little Sisters of Hoboken,” a one-time missionary order that ran a leper colony on an island south of France who discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, accidentally killed the other fifty-two residents of the convent with her tainted vichyssoise while they were off playing bingo with a group of Maryknolls. Upon discovering the disaster, Mother Superior had a vision in which she was told to start a greeting card company to raise funds for the burials. From there, you can imagine just how funny it gets! Nunsense includes solo star turns, madcap dance routines, and an audience quiz. It’s positively “habit forming!”

      This production is a real winner for Tex Arts. What a fabulous cast, and it is stage beautifully. The space seems a little small, but it provides an intimacy that is wonderful, especially for this... Expand

      This production is a real winner for Tex Arts. What a fabulous cast, and it is stage beautifully. The space seems a little small, but it provides an intimacy that is wonderful, especially for this interactive vehicle. If you are looking for something to make you laugh, you've found it. Especially if you have a Catholic background. You'll "get" some of the inside jokes that are over many people's heads. Regardless of your upbringing though, you'll enjoy the wonderful voices and comedic timing of these 5 very talented ladies, and the great music from the band. Collapse

      You never get to tired of this musical, and its a good thing, having run in several central texas venues. This fun musical pleased what appeared to be a large group of locals, many parents and students of the Texarts School. Highlights.. Patty Rowell's Sister Mary Amnesia , whos unbelievable pure, powerful voice portrayed the perfect contrast to her charactization of a kind, confused favorite sister. Also a standout, the lovely and graceful Ashley Mckay, as Sister Leo. Though some of the sisters stumbled and forgot lines, the professional troup was able to pull off an enjoyable performance.       This is the 4th production I have seen from TexArts, and I must say that they are always impressive. Todd and company consistently manage to put together such stellar casts, and this one is no... Expand

      This is the 4th production I have seen from TexArts, and I must say that they are always impressive. Todd and company consistently manage to put together such stellar casts, and this one is no exception. From top to bottom each actress has moments of brilliance onstage, and this show entertains from beginning to end. I especially enjoyed Patty Rowell's portrayal of Sister Amnesia, and Emily Bem as Sister Robert Anne. But that in no way should detract from the wonderful performances of the other 3 incredibly talented actresses. The chemistry of all 5 performers is exceptional, and the musicians were awesome. You don't want to miss this show!! Collapse

      Great play. Sr. Amnesia is awesome; everyone is above average. Thank you for such a fine production. I have seen Nunsense several times - this is the BEST.

      Five nuns rolling down the stairs, dying of laughter. Goggin's script is an affectionate poke at all the usual nun stereotypes but he doesn't forget to pull up the veil to show us the divas just... Expand

      Five nuns rolling down the stairs, dying of laughter. Goggin's script is an affectionate poke at all the usual nun stereotypes but he doesn't forget to pull up the veil to show us the divas just dying to bust out. Being brought up by nuns did me in when I saw "Doubt" two nights ago. But, as a feral Catholic, "Nunsense" delivered me from the hell of nun-induced neurosis and offered me up on the great altar of silly delight. The humor is black...and white playing on all the satire and sadism that comes with the habit while at the same time delivering respectful and loving character delineations. Oy vey, the voices were so damn good! Austin is blessed as a musical haven, with pros like Emily Bem really selling the show! It's a bit of a drive for a theater in a strip mall (albeit a comfortable and well appointed little theater) but it is well worth the trip. The innocently played sexual innuendos won't phase devout Catholics as the plot is ludicrous from start to rip roaring finish. Collapse
