    DONNA HOWARD, Texas State Representative

Expert on the Women of Shakespeare

PANELIST: AMALIA RODRIGUEZ-MENDOZA, Travis County District Clerk

HOSTED BY: Former Mayor of Austin BRUCE TODD and ELIZABETH CHRISTIAN

Austin Shakespeare is now in its 24th year of presenting free Shakespeare in Zilker Park, and has begun to reach out during the year
for presentations and conversations about how Shakespeare illuminates contemporary issues. Last year, Austin Shakespeare had tremendous success featuring State Senator Kirk Watson and State Representative Elliott Naishtat in a forum on topics relating to Shakespeare, Politics and Texas.

This year, Austin Shakespeare will present its second political forum, Shakespeare, Politics and Women. The evening will feature actors performing scenes from Shakespeare that address women’s issues (Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Kate & Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, and Portia in The Merchant of Venice) and brief talks by speakers on the contemporary position of women in society and what relevance Shakespeare bears on women’s issues today. Following the speakers and scene performances, panelists will participate in a question and answer session.

The forum will take place at The Curtain Theatre (Austin’s own replica of an Elizabethan theatre) on the property of entrepreneur Richard Garriott. The Theatre is located on the shores of Lake Austin, off City Park Road.
