Everything trapped in a swamp eventually rots. Families are no exception. Economically stagnating in what was once simply their rambling vacation home, Mecha and Gregorio and their four children pass time drinking, wishing, dreaming, or complaining their lives away. Languishing in bed or on the floor at odd hours of the day, no one seems to have the will power to get up and out of their economic doldrums. In contrast, Mecha’s cousin Tali lives in a nearby town with her more enterprising husband and younger children, but when they come to visit Mecha, their orderly lives seem to head for the swamp, also. Somehow not as depressing as it might sound, Lucrecia Martel’s debut film is a fascinating portrait of people falling down the class ladder.
