Born itself of an activist impulse in 1978, Women & Their Work created a new venue in revolt against women’s invisibility in museums and galleries. Now 30 years later and still thriving, Women & Their Work asks itself, “What role does activism play in art today?” In video, photography, drawing, and performance, six artists curated by Regine Basha explore some of the thorniest issues of our time in subtle, complex, even humanistic ways. What these artists bring to the conversation is a renewed interest in how art can have ‘agency’ in the world beyond art (and beyond the art market) and become seamlessly absorbed into culture at large. Through challenging, interventionist tactics, these artists have all ‘acted on’ specific moments and given contexts, some very risky, in an effort to short circuit the status quo and reveal other ways of thinking and being.
