Austin Playhouse opens their 2008-2009 Main Stage Season with Peter Shaffer's award-winning masterpiece; the powerful and moving story of the man who destroyed Mozart. Set in 18th century Vienna at the court of Emperor Joseph II, Amadeus is told from the point of view of Antonio Salieri, the court’s composer, who presents for the audience his final composition: “The Death of Mozart; or, Did I Do It?” Amadeus’ powerhouse cast is led by Rick Roemer as Salieri and David Gallagher as Mozart, with Kimberly Barrow, Brian Coughlin, Huck Huckaby, Laetitia Leon, Christopher Loveless, Ian Manners, Barry Miller, and Tom Parker. Amadeus is directed by Don Toner and David Stahl.

      At the second night of this production's five-week run Rick Roemer owned the stage. Portraying composer Antonio Salieri both as an aged invalid and as a 40-ish striving court composer, he shows extraordinary attention, precision and energy throughout, communicating a depth of feeling that is hair-raising. Salieri gives us his version of his struggle with music, Mozart and God, roughly in that order. David Gallagher as Mozart undergoes evolution from capering, giggling, vulgarity through shocks, disasters and deteriorating health without losing his fundamental innocence. The plot feeds us with the evil delights of Salieri’s successful campaign to diminish Mozart, never perceived by contemporaries as a rival to Salieri. As we see retribution arrive, we can feel the pity and fear that Aristotle considered the essential qualities of tragedy.       At the second night of this production's five-week run Rick Roemer owned the stage. Portraying composer Antonio Salieri both as an aged invalid and as a 40-ish striving court composer, he shows extraordinary attention, precision and energy throughout, communicating a depth of feeling that is hair-raising.
