An angelic revolt, urban chaos, social disorder and personal struggle all figure prominently in José Rivera’s brilliant 1991 drama, Marisol. Rivera is one of our most celebrated Hispanic playwrights and Marisol has been called “the Roman Catholic Angels in America.” 

Rivera has won two Obie Awards for playwriting, a Kennedy Center Fund for New American plays Grant, a Fulbright Arts Fellowship in playwriting, the Whiting Writers' Award, a McKnight Fellowship, the 2005 Norman Lear Writing Award, a 2005 Impact Award and a Berilla Kerr Playwriting Award. Presented by the award-winning Vestige Group, a sponsored project of Austin Circle of Theaters.

      Dark, dark, but the grace is Rivera’s imagination and sense of black humor. Angels rebel against an indifferent God. The world has tilted entirely, with landmarks unrecognizable and the sun... Expand

      Dark, dark, but the grace is Rivera’s imagination and sense of black humor. Angels rebel against an indifferent God. The world has tilted entirely, with landmarks unrecognizable and the sun traversing the sky from north to south. Time, physics and geography have come apart. New York City is hell on earth as Marisol Perez encounters wild characters, strung together like cartoons on a clothesline. An unholy immaculate conception and delivery turn the world inside out. The final, powerful image is that of angry humans throwing rocks into the sky, taking sides with the angels against God. Emily Pate as Marisol is lovely and earnest; other actors draw crisp, assertive characters. Music was lonely and ethereal. This stark production repays your time and attention. Don’t go expecting any easy laughs, and prepare to watch the world coming apart at the seams.       Let me begin by saying that I am a displaced "evacuee" from Galveston, Texas. I am a big fan of this play and I love the script. When I first saw this performed (about seven years ago) it seemed... Expand

      Let me begin by saying that I am a displaced "evacuee" from Galveston, Texas. I am a big fan of this play and I love the script. When I first saw this performed (about seven years ago) it seemed much more futuristic and "out there." Now the "magic realism" in the script just seems realistic. Watching the actors fumble around in the debris, stating, "We survived - for what? To do what?" really struck a nerve with me last night and made me reflect on what it will be like to return home, and whether it is really even worth it to "rebuild." The production is okay. It's not terrible, it's not great, it's okay. There are still a lot of problems with the show, mainly the scene transitions which are long and in the dark. However, there are some very good performances, especially that of Andrew Varenhorst and Bastion Carboni. If you have never seen Marisol, check it out. Collapse
