      “The Clean House” is a box of chocolates laced with belladonna. One is tempted to dip into that box again and again. Lauren Lane merits her star billing as the “straight man” for the... Expand

      “The Clean House” is a box of chocolates laced with belladonna. One is tempted to dip into that box again and again. Lauren Lane merits her star billing as the “straight man” for the eccentricities of a cleaning-obsessed sister and a moody Brazilian maid yearning to be a comic. Her timing is superb and subtle, visibly progressing through crazy situations. This is a women’s play – the only man, Lane’s husband, is a nutcase physician who runs off with an alluring aged mastectomy patient. The author and director at times happily disrupt the audience's suspension of disbelief, provoking sudden laughter with "magic realism" when hallucinations become shared or defined playing spaces unexpectedly, absurdly merge.
